Subject: LSD Slipping?

Occasionally when I stomp on my trusty 4.7, both rears break loose, then a nasty, loud hum/grind starts.

Looking in the mirror, it seems only one tire is spinning when this happens...is this the LSD slipping? Is this loud noise normal?

I only ask cause it sounds like a destructive sound.

If you have a factory limited slip, there is a 50% chance of both wheels catching from a stomp. When you don't catch, the clutch gears in the LSD try to catch the other tire but can't because of the speed. The only way you can be sure to have both wheels break loose and squeel is to have a locker put in, Detroit lockers are good. With a locker you will break both loose 100% of the time, but you will hear that locker clunk like a maniac everytime you take a corner.

Dodge truck anti-spin differentials are sensitive to friction additive being "fresh".
Is the fluid and additive change overdue?

Noise is almost always the first side effect of this fluid service being overdue.

I would imagine its the factory fill still. Just rolled over 30K ~1 week ago.

I will probably change the rear end fluid pretty soon. From what I've read, many synthetic fluids have friction additives already, would it hurt to put the specified additive in anyway?

I changed mine over to Amsoil and was told to add the friction additives anyway. I have 16,000 miles on mine.
