I have a question for Larry or any other knowlegdable person: Could bad plug wires/cap&rotor cause a vehicle to crank and then almost cut off? My truck just started doin this today no matter if its the 1st time I crank it or the 10th time. I was wondering if the fog lights me and my friend put in yesterday might be causing it. I was thinkin about rewiring them b/c when I turn them on, the voltage drops a little. Any info would help b/c its aggravating as hell.

Did you disconnect battery for the installation ? That or a low battery can cause PCM to forget its idle setting, might have to give it some throttle for a bit to relearn. That's if I understand you correctly, what exactly do you mean by "crank and almost shut off" ? I'm guessing you mean the motor catches, then dies ?

no, the motor will crank and the rpms will go up like normal as soon as it cranks, then when they come down, it almost cuts off. will resetting the computer make it stop doing this? we didnt disconnect the battery when we installed the lights. didnt get shocked either lol.

"Cranking" refers to the motor turning over by the starter before it actually starts running. Are you talking about a starter problem ?

I mean that the truck will start, but when the rpms come down to idle right after it starts, the truck will almost cut off and then it will idle fine. I'm not tryin to confuse you.

In other words... crank = start. Sounds like a dirty/bad IAC to me.

How to Clean the IAC Solenoid:

This is recommended at every Tune-Up to prevent excess carbon buildup on the IAC plunger. In some cases, you'll notice a slightly erratic idle quality. This is the first step in taking care of that problem. IAC = Intake Air Control (Solenoid).


Remove the Air Hat from the Throttle Body

Disconnect the sensor harness from the IAC Solenoid (Rear of Throttle Body)

Remove the two Torx-25 Screws

Remove the IAC Solenoid (Be careful not to lose the rubber O-Ring)

Spray some Carb/TB Cleaner in the IAC port on the Throttle Body and let it sit

Spray some Carb/TB Cleaner on the tip of the IAC Solenoid and wipe clean (Do NOT forcefully twist or push the plunger - You will damage the Solenoid. Wipe very gently.)

Spray a little bit more Carb/TB Cleaner in the IAC port on the Throttle Body and wipe clean with a thin/lint-free rag

Reinstall the IAC Solenoid (Make sure you don't lose the rubber gasket on the solenoid)

Reinstall the sensor connector and airhat

Start the engine and let idle for about 1 minute.

all right. I'll try that in a couple of hours. I am gonna go ahead and change the plug wires and dist. cap b/c a guy I know is gonna give em to me. thanks for the help guys.
