Subject: Grinding/Growling noise

Message:
I have a 99 Dakota 4x4 CC, 92649 miles, which has started making a grinding/growling noise whenever I hit a bump. The noise starts out loud then gradually fades until the next bump. This happens when I go straight or around curves. I don't hear it when I turn corners. I checked the brake pads and rotors and the look good. Checked the front axle shafts and there isn't any play. There is about 3/8 inch of play in the front driveshaft when I twist it but nothing if I try to rock it sideways. The ball joints were replaced about 8 months ago. I have used the 4-wheel drive very little, 3-4 times for pulling a camper on hills in a campground, since I bought it. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry man, no suggetsions for your problem; however, I do have grinding, growling noise whenever I turn corners at a slow speed... it sounds like it comes from the back end. Have you ever heard anything like this!?

I know it's a longshot... but after my last water crossing I was hearing a horrible grinding/growling in turns and over big bumps. I was scared to death I had really ,really screwed up something. Then one night I looked underneath with a flashlight and the plastic wheel well liners had gotten knocked loose and were getting rubbed by the tires in certain situations, causing the sound.

The plastic wheel wells are fine. The odd thing is this started yesterday while going to work. Did it again as I was coming home last night. But today there was wasn't any such noise at all. Same roads, same bumps. Kinda weird don't you think?

Maybe from wheel bearings?

But most of the time I've noticed they get noisy and stay noisy. But who knows. Anything is possible with the suspension DODGE makes. That is their weak point in both cars and trucks they make. Motor mounts, ball joints, etc=sh*t!

Ryan- My 97 has the same problem. Feels/sounds like gears grinding or tires slipping. Mine is worse turning right from a dead stop. Am going to have my mechainic look at it when he puts snow tires on monday. Anybody have any ideas would be appreciated.

Well I found out what the cause of the noise was.
Both hubs and wheel bearings had to be replaced. I was about to lose the left front at any time. Thanks for all the response.
