 Subject: clanking noise

last saturday i got in the truck, pushed in the clutch and turned the key and all i heard was the starter spinning. so i decided to push it off and pop the clutch. when she fired i heard a horrible clanking noise coming from the bell housing/transmission area. it made the same noise off and on going through the gears all the way up to 4th. i made it home and decided to park it till i could see my mechanic on monday. he said that it was probably a problem with my bendix mechanism sticking and if i heard it again to put in a new starter. truck ran fine all week and then friday morning i heard it again. so i took it to my shop and pulled the starter and sure enough the sheild on the bendix was broken off. i put in a new starter and took it for a test drive and the noise is still there. i have no problem with the clutch or changing gears but this clanking noise is really loud and it sounds like its doin some damage to something. please give me some ideas.
