I used Mobil One 10w30 Trisynthetic and a Mobil One filter.

There's been a hot debate here in regards to which synthetic oil is best, so be prepared for a differing of opinions about this one. I will say for myself personally that since I put Mobil One in my truck it seeems to idle much more smoothly than before. However, I don't have "lifelong" experience with the oil, so can't back up my personal satisfaction with a proven history.

I think most would agree, however, that you can't really go wrong with Mobil One.

David

10w-30 is fine for year-round service especially in your neck of the woods. Mobil 1 is good as is Amsoil from what I hear.

I use 10W30 Mobil 1 and any filter but Fram/Pennzoil/Quakerstate. Some say Amsoil, Royal Purple, and/or Redline is better. I haven't seen wear data or dyno charts proving that they are better and they cost more.

Any major brand synthetic oil is better than dino oil. I really don't think the brand of oil matters much. Stick with 10w-30. I like Mobil-1 but use Valvoline because that is what they carry at VIC.
I do think the oil filter brand is important. I would only use Purolater Pure-1, AC gold, or mobil-1 oil filters. They filter down to under 10 microns, most of the standard filters are in the 20-25 micron range.

Stick with a K&N filter, and if you seek typical synth oil from local places, go with Castrol Syntec or Valvoline synth.

This isn't the site I was looking for but try it.

I used Pennzoil Synthetic but felt no difference.
Now I use Mobil1 10w30 Tri-synthetic with filter and felt a big difference. I will stick to it.

Amsoil is also a very good product. It is also used by the aircraft industry so you KNOW it's good.

Hey guys, i don't know if any of you have tried
the newer havoline 5w-30 synthetic. But i was using
mobile one trisynthetic for about a year in my
2000 4.7 l engine, and well i decided to switch to
the havoline for once just to give it a try and to
save about 7 bucks. I was nicely suprised to find
out that the engine performed ever better than
before!!! my hwy gas mileage on a 1600 mile round
trip increased with every fill up!!! on a
previous trip about a 1200 miles my average gas
mileage was only about 16, with the highest at
16.7. with the latest trip the mileage increased
from 17-18.4 as the highest!!! on the return the
mileage was averaged over 18 mpg!!!! So i think i
am goign to stick with the havoline for a while
and see how my city driving goes!!! just a little
more info for you all to digest!!!

Whichever sythetic you pick, it is probably a good idea to stay with that vs trying out different brands at each oil change. I have heard that the additives used in different brands can 'sludge up' if combined...

I have thought of using mobil 1 10w-30 in my 2002 qc 4x4 dakota but also have looked at other brands of synthetics. Is havoline and vavoline a true synthetic like mobil 1. I currently use Havoline 5w-30 convential oil and i'm wondering if a synthetic is worth the money. I change my own oil every 2500 to 3000 miles. have really thought about switching to vavoline instead of havoline because they just opened a new vavoline instant oil change station near by.

Scott,
Take a look at the AMSOIL v/s Mobil1 post
here on the "General" board.
Changing Synthetic Oil of any brand at 3,000
miles is simply foolish.
There is a big difference in brands of
Synthetic Oils and NOBODY has more experiance and
a better quality product than AMSOIL.

Scott,
You really dug deep to find this "old" thread. Are you trying to decide between Dino, Group III Synthetic, or a True Synthetic?
-----
Chevron owns Texaco who owns Havoline. So, Chevron owns Havoline. Havoline offers both non-synthetic (DINO), and Group III (not a true) synthetic motor oil. NOTE: Not all Havoline dino is produced by Chevron. Although the bottles look identical, on the back it will identify the ChevronTexaco Global Lubricants out of CA, or list Equilon out of Tx. If I recall correctly, the Equilon version is produced by Shell for now, and is not likely to be the same additive package as the Chevron. The majority consensus to date here has been to go with the Chevron version -- the Shell formulation seems to be unknown at this point. If you are going to compare, Havoline should be compared to Amsoil XL7500 (The only Group III Amsoil, specifically formulated for the "quick-lube" stores).
-----
Valvoline Synthetic also uses a Group III base oil, so it's also hydrocracked oil and not a "true" synthetic. Again, if you are going to compare, Valvoline should be compared to Amsoil XL7500. Also, The majority consensus to date would suggest that Havoline is a better oil than Valvoline.
-----
Per your question ... If you are trying to decide between Havoline, Valvoline, or Mobil1 ... I would recommend Mobil1. Of course, I would also ask that you consider Amsoil.

If you want an actual synthetic oil stick with Amsoil, Mobil 1, Royal Purple, or Redline. Most of the other name brands are nothing more than hydro-cracked Group 3 petroleum oils. Castrol started this horses##t trend by switching from PAO basestock to petroleum to fool consumers and maximize profits. Most of the other companies jumped on the band wagon too. Why pay $5 per quart for conventional oil when you can get it for $1.69?

I don't know which is the best, but Havoline Synthetic 10W-30 is very good oil. I have paid $2.99 a quart for it in the past. It recently went up to $3.34 a quart in my area. For the price, it is hard to beat. I have used other synthetic oil and have not been that impressed. I have tryed 4-5 other brands that was not as good and cost more to boot.

Hey OilyDude-

I own and operate a full service engine rebuilding and high performance shop. I offer my clients what they want, be it Mobil1, RedLine, Amsoil, or Schaffers. Ever hear of Schaffers? I doubt it, but it is my favorite and sold like Amsoil through Independent Dealers.

My personal favorites in order of preference:

Schaffers
Amsoil
Mobil1
Redline

I use Schaffers and Amsoil (depends on the vehicle and the product)

For TRUE Racing where you tear down the engine after every race I would put Redline first.

If you are into extended drains and one of the best additives packages, Amsoil first.

If you are "price" sensitive and change often, Mobil1 first.

I see comments such as yours often and I get the following question: If Schaffers, Amsoil, and Redline are better than Mobil1, how come not one high end super car is using it as a factory fill?

To answer your question as simple as possible, Exxon/Mobil has a whole lot more money than the other three put together. It is not just a quality issue, it is a "low bid" issue. A loss leader for marketing purposes.

Here in America, Mobil and Texaco have been at each others throats for years for the GM factory fill business. Mobil has consistently outbid (underbid) Texaco for this business. That's how Mobil 1 got into Corvette.

Schaffers, Amsoil, and Redline have no interest in "mass market", and certainly no interest in low bidding since they don't have the ability nor the desire to mass produce on that scale.

The European market is a little different, although (low) bidding is involved. But when it comes to Mercedes Benz and Porsche, there were two big considerations. They both wanted full synthetic, not a Group III, and they wanted something that would be available World Wide and on every retail shelf. And the only synthetic I can think of that you can get in ANY country you go to is Mobil 1.

For instance, when a Porsche goes out the door, Porsche must be certain that the oil recommendations are indeed available to EVERY owner - EVERYWHERE - AROUND THE WORLD, whether it is in Iowa or South Africa - and Mobil1 is.

There is much more to the initial factory fills than meets the eye. Think of your TV Remote Control for Instance. The put the cheapest "good" battery in from the factory - NOT the more expensive "best" batteries.

One would think that oil fill would seem to be an inconsequential expense in the costs going into a new car. It may be inconsequential to you and me when we buy 4 or 5 quarts, or even a case. But when you go through the amount of oil that GM, Ford, and Chrysler do it can add of to a very large expense.

Now I figure Wal-Mart is probably one of the best places to buy oil at a discount (retail customers). I believe I saw regular conventional Mobil on sale the other day for $1.29 per quart. Now I'm not sure what GM is paying for their Mobil factory fill today, but I know 5 years ago it was between $.45 and $.55 per quart. That's a huge savings.

My point to the (under) bidding war is, for example, if Texaco would have gotten the (low) bid on factory fill, the Corvette would have had a Texaco Synthetic emblem on the valve cover.

Although I believe the Mobil1 is a lot better product that the Texaco Synthetic. Believe me, every item that goes into the new cars starts with a (low) bid from someone.

Mobil1 is a great oil. But don't be a preacher preaching to the choir (they are already converted), and try telling me that it is because Mobil1 is "the best". Simply not true.

Per your own post:
"we felt Mobil 1 could do the job in the Viper, Dodge's highest-performance sports car."
– Charlie Brown III, Viper Engine Supervisor,
DaimlerChrysler Corporation"

You see... he said "could do the job", NOT "was BEST for the job".

If you had a Business Degree you would know how to "read between the lines" and I would not have to explain this. All you are doing is ignoring Marketing 101.

Mobil 1 is used in race cars around the world –

NASCAR, Formula 1, endurance racers, you name it. Here are some comments from some of the top drivers and race engineers who rely on the protection of Mobil 1.

"We really want to push everything to the limit, and without the best oil, you just can't do it. Mobil 1 has been able to let me do a lot of things that we haven't been able to do in the past."
– Rusty Wallace, NASCAR race driver

"I've been using Mobil almost my entire career. I've had over 50 wins. That's something I'm really proud of and I owe a lot of that to Mobil 1."
– Rusty Wallace, NASCAR race driver

"Formula One is an extremely rigorous test ground for the Mobil product. We're seeing extremely high temperatures, high loads in the engine, and of course the lubricants and fuels that support those processes have to be the very best. And that's exactly what we strive to achieve with our partner, Mobil."
– Ron Dennis, President and CEO, TAG McLaren Group

"To race a car in the 24 Hours of Le Mans means that the driver intends to race that car to the maximum. So every single component of that car has to be designed to withstand that kind of driving. And we also would strongly recommend to every driver of one of our road cars to go on using Mobil 1 and, by this, protecting their investment in the car."
