Subject: Retainer clip in rearend
IP: Logged

Message:
While servicing rear differential after changing out a speed sensor, I found what appears to be 1/2 of a retainer clip laying in the bottom of my rear differential. The clip is clearly broken off.

I determined it to be part of a retainer clip after checking my manual.

How important is it that I get this changed ASAP and how hard is it going to be? Has anyone else found this laying in their rear diff? I have had my rear fluid changed approx 6 times in my 100k+ miles but only found it when I actually pulled the cover instead of the pump the old fluid out and squirt the new fluid in method.

Wow! I found the same thing in my rear diff when I changed the oil at 15k. I showed it to the dealer and they rebuilt the rear-end. It's a retainer clip for the LSD clutches. I think the only ill-effect is your LSD would be less effective, though the dealership implied the rear end could self-destruct. If you have 100k on yours, I would guess that's just a line.

Looking at that picture again, mine was broken in almost the same way. Guess it's another DC defect.

Check if your LSD is still working. It appears you have the shop manual, I believe they describe how to test it in there.

My LSD still works fine.

I try to stay out of the pedal as much as possible because of it but you know how it is, every once in a while you have to remind a ricer that a V-8 is still bigger than a 4-banger.

I figure 2 strips of rubber means the LSD is still working.

Wow does that piece look familiar. I went to change the diff fluids at 28,000 miles and found the exact same thing. Dealer fixed it under warranty.
