Subject: ? about Moog ball joint boot.

Message:
I replaced the ball joints in my 2001 Dakota with Moog ball joints (pn K7392). The replacement was not too bad but I am having a problem with the rubber boot. The boot does not want to slide up over the ball joint to seal it up. I tried for an hour to get one of them on and tried everything I could think of without ruining the rubber boot. I finally gave up and finished the rest of the job but I need to go back and get the boots sealed. Please let me know if there is a tool or procedure for doing that. Thanks, and let me know if you need any pointers about the replacement.

The boots on the Moog joints are a slip-fit and held in position only when the control arm is bolted in position. Tey are not "sealed" like the originals; the lack of a retainer (on the big end) allows old grease to escape when re-greasing.

Are your boots not properly seated with everything bolted up?

The boot stays in place but it seems like stuff could get in the top side where it meets the ball joint. I was expecting that it would fit snuggly around the circumference of the ball joint. I suposse it won't let anything in because of the grease but I wanted to make sure. Is that correct?

the boot NEEDS to go around the circumference. It is a tight fit so that it doesn't work itself off. I took a small pair of channel locks and helped it down once I had the boot about half way on by hand. Once you get it moving it goes on easy. Just make sure you grip the outer edge otherwise you may take a chance of tearing the rubber.

01quadcab4x4, were your ball joints moog K7392. I tried again tonight and I can not get the thing on ( I have an extra set for my Durango). Part of the outer edge started to fall apart so I stopped. I just can't believe that they are that hard to get on. It is apparently a metal ring inside the rubber. Did you lubricate or heat them first? Thanks for the help!

THE ANSWER:

Don't use channel locks, you'll destroy the boot.

I put mine on using a small piece of scrap 2x4... with a holesaw drilled a hole in the middle (can't remember what size but the boot was a snug fit inside the hole).

Put the boot inside the piece of wood from underneith, the stiff edges on the bottom of the boot will keep it from slipping.

Then, with some force, just push down over the balljoint. The wood keeps the pressure even on the lip of the boot as you're pressing it down.

Yer all done.

Well, I was able to seat the rubber boots properly this weekend. I did it by drilling a 1.5" hole in a piece of 1" lexan (2"x4" lumber would probably work fine) with a hole saw. I then put the lexan in a vice to hold it horizontally with the hole facing up. Placed the rubber boot in the hole and lubed the inside edged with a small amount of lithium grease. Then all that was left was to place the ball joint in the boot and tap it in with a rubber mallet. It worked great and I owe the success to the knowledgeable respondents on this site. Thanks guys!

So what's the deal with the Moog ball joint boots, are there 2 different styles? I have read that some people have to force the boots onto the ball joint because there's a tight fit, but the boots on my Moog ball joints just slipped over the joint, no tight fit at all. When I grease the joints, excess grease spews forth from under the boot. This allows for old grease to get out of the joint, but it's not water-proof by any means.

Anyone else have the Moog ball joints where the boot doesn't fit tight over the joint?
