Subject: Manual Tranny Lube
IP: Logged

Message:
I've read a few threads on this site about what lubricant to use in my manual transmision.
I have a 2003 QC 4x4 and I bought Amsoil 75W-90 gear lube for it.. but Now I've read that it may need a different lube.
Is this true?
How can I tell what tranny I have NV1500 or NV3500? and what lube I should use?
As well as what is the proper volumes of lube?
I plan on changing all the fluids to Amsoil in the next few nights diffs, t-case, tranny, and engine!

any help will be appreaciated!

Your tranny is the NV3500. It takes Syncromesh transmission fluid available only from Chevy or Dodge dealers. It is a synthetic fluid, but it cost a fortune because, well you're getting it at the stealership. So, a lot of peeps use Amsoil Series 2000 5w-30. Yes it takes motor oil, not gear lube. You'll burn the tranny up with gear lube!! Whatever you choose, make sure it's compatible with yellow metals (brass, copper, etc) because as I understand, the syncro cones are some type of yellow metal...

Thanx for the info Snake!
Is the NV3500 the only manual tranny that came in the 03's?
is it ok to use just the normal Amsoil 5W-30 or does it have to be the 2000 series?

I think people use the series 2000 because it's labeled as heavy duty. The normal 5w-30 would probably work just fine.

The NV1500 was used only for the 4-cyl...

Autozone sells Pennzoil Synchromesh for 5 bucks a quart. It's in the gear lube section. The Chevy dealer sells Synchromesh cheaper than the Dodge dealer. Don't use anything but the correct fluid in this transmission. It is very particular about what fluid to run in it. If you do decide to use Amsoil use the 5W-30 diesel engine oil.

What is so different in this tranny that it can't use the gear lube. Is it just the "Yellow Metals" or is there more to it than that?

It just seems odd that they would have one Tranny out of the Dak's that takes a different fluid.

If anyone knows I would be interested to hear what you know!
Thanx for all your help everyone!
I think I'll go with the Amsoil 5W-30 HDD

Good question. I don't know the answer, but the NV3500 was a joint development between Chrysler, GM, and New Venture. Maybe it's the tolerances of the gears, or that they wanted better efficiency than sloshing through 90w oil. The NV4500 takes gear oil... but it's rated as an HD tranny. The 3500 is rated as a medium duty...

So even though I have the heavy duty package on my truck it still would have the NV3500? not the NV4500?

Been using the HDD 5w-30 for almost 200,000 miles with
nothing but excellant results.

You can also use the ASL 5w-30 which cost a few bucks less per
qt.

Shifts good on those cold mornings !

Good to hear! Thanx!
I was also wondering if anyone knows of a serial number or any type of ID to make sure the tranny is a NV3500?
I asked the parts guy at the stealership what tranny my truck would have but he didn't even look it up he just agreed that its most likely the Nv3500..
I'd rather be sure than take his word for it.

The 2003 factory service manual outlines two different manual transmissions for that model year. The NV1500 and NV3500. The 1500 is characterized by a removable clutch housing. The 3500 housing is not removeable, it's part of the case.

Does anyone know if you just fill the tranny up till it reaches the filler hole like you would on a diff?
Or is there a different way of doing it?
