Subject: Dueler's or Discover's?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have an '02 CC 4x4 4.7 and will be needing tires before too long. Stock RT/S Good-fora-Years seem to be OK, but wet traction seems pretty poor (may also be result from LSD and 4.7).

The previous owner seems to have spun the rears alot as when I purchased it, the rears were wore much more than the fronts.

My father has a '95 Ram that he has always put 285/75-16 Cooper Discover A/T's on and they wear well, have good on and off-road traction and are quiet as well.

I have read some about the Dueler A/T Revo's and they sound promising but I would like some real world input as to if I want to go with these instead.

BTW- I'm looking at stock 265/70-16 sizes only.

How important is wet traction? How important is off-road capability? Most all terrain tires have a harder rubber compound for more aggressive driving off road which does poor on wet pavement. I just got a set of widetracks made by firestone/bridgestone. They have a softer rubber compound and do well in rain. I do not do as much off-road driving, and nothing very rough.

once you evaluate what your daily driving conditions will be, spend some time on the manufacturer website and look for a tire with the appropriate rating.

My '95 dakota came with the goodyear wranglers, no longer manufacturered. I have had the goodyear all terrains, and futura dakotas (cooper tires). The futura tires did not last long and wore out too easy. I have had the widetracks on for about 2 months now, rides quiet, great traction on pavement even wet. I have heard great reviews about the goodyear long trails - good all around tire.

Primarily 'highway' driving, cruising down the road 50mi/day to/from work.

I would like some off-road capability, but nothing harsh.

Looking for an all around tire that is biased a bit for pavement, in any condition.

Have you considered Goodrich TAs ? I had the Duelers on a Toyota years ago and they don't compare well. We have the Discoverers on a half ton Chevy at work, and I've bailed them out plowing stuff with my truck that they couldn't on the Discoverers. Goodrich also runs pretty quiet on dry pavement, I wouldn't go with either of your choices.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Any "real" all terrain tire will be loud on the highway. If the tire comes with a milage warranty, it is NOT a real all terrain tire. Real All terrain tires are made with harder rubber to grip better on off road surfaces. Look into a good APT tire. These are designed for mostly pavement driving with decent off-road capability (tread pattern are usually the same as A/T's but not a large)

Check out some tires and their ratings.

Traction is rated on how well it stops on wet concrete and asphalt.
Grade A: The tire performed well on both surfaces.
Grade B: The tire performed well on at least one of the surfaces.
Grade C: The tire performed poorly on one or both of the surfaces.

Heat resistance:
Grade A: The maximum performance level indicating the tire withstood a half-hour run at 115 mph without failing.
Grade B: The tire passed 100 mph but not 115 mph.
Grade C: The minimum performance level indicating that the tire failed to complete a half-hour at 100 mph.

treadwear is based on standard rating of 100 so a
rating of 200 means it lasts twice as long - our course your milage will vary depending on driving habbits.

There is also a mud and snow rating
m/s, m+s, m&s.
There is really no set standard. M = mud and s=snow. If the tire is m/s or m&s or m+s then it is rated for mud and snow.

speed ratings:
N 87 mph Temporary Spare Tires
P 93 mph
Q 99 mph Studless & Studdable Winter Tires
R 106 H.D. Light Truck Tires
S 112 mph Family Sedans & Vans

First of all there is a world of difference between Dueler AT's and Dueler at Revo's. Kowalski may have had the former.
I've had the Revo's (31x10.5/ 15 ) on my 2001 QC 4x4 for 20,000 mi and like them alot.
Great handling and ride and for an AT pretty good on the road noise scale.
BUT, they will be replaced with Michelin LTX m/s when the time comes.
Why?
The Revo's are not as good on rain as I had hoped , but a heck of alot better than the Wrangler RTS's were.
The highway noise is more than the LTX's would give .
The LTX's on a previous truck gave me 60,000 mi and were only 60% worn when I sold it.
The Revo's look like 60,000mi is all they will give me based on current wear.
Sorry , no experience with Disco's.
Hope this helps a bit.

Ahh...

Thanks much!

It may just end up which is more economical and/or looks. Going by your input and my known Discover's input, it seems close.

I have REVO A/Ts 275/70 16 and they are great tires. I love them I just bought my second set after getting 50,000 of hard driving out of the first. I feel these are a higher quality tire than the coopers. I would put the two side by side and see for yourself.

different tire,,but the Michelin Cross Terrains - Suck Big Time. Supposed to last like 60,000kMi.'s,,,I'm getting about 15-20k out of them. They are OK at best in the rain,,but that's w/100% tread,,,a few miles later and it's like having skids instead of tires. I'm hard on my tires,,but at $140-160 a pop,,they are definitely not worth it.

A year ago I opted for a set Michelin LTX m/s after checking out customer satisfaction on Tire Rack.com on several makes of tires. I am VERY happy with the Michelin's as they work great in all kinds of conditions. I've put 26,000 miles on them with very little wear. I looked at the REVOS and honestly was going to buy a set but they were on back order and were unavailable for 6 to 8 weeks. I have a couple of buds with REVOS and it's a good look tire with a more aggressive tread design. Check Tire Rack for customer satisfaction on what you’re looking to buy.

NEVER FORGET!
