Hey guys, I use to be a mechanic but I quit and got out of the
business. I now have my dakota and I'm going to be getting back
into mechanics (on a personal level just in the garage). I need
new tools! No fancy whiz bang stuff just quality wrenches,
sockets, allen keys, etc. (mechanics tools). I need a good amount
of them to do extensive projects like changing the heads, and
maybe even the block. But I don't need everything right away
because i can buy more as i go. Basically i am looking for advice
on some new tools. I haven't looked around and I'm sure you
guys in the business know whats good these days and what
isn't.
I only want to spend about $300 - $400 at the start. I dont need
specialty tools for the heads and block because i will buy those
as i go. Just need a good set of tools, a nice tool box, and a
good deal! Thanks!

Sears is having a sale this week end. For basic consumer hand tools, I think they are pretty tough to beat. Buy a 50-100 piece set, and you'll have almost everything you need for most home garage work. You can always pick up the other tools as you need them.

Do check out sears. about 95% of my hand tools are all craftsman. You can get some great deals on sale. I think right now they have a 250 piece mechanics set with plastic tool box for $199. I picked up a 101 piece about 5 years ago for something like $59 on sale. And i've only had to add 3 sockets and an extension set. It came with 1/4, 1/2 and 3/8 ratchets. I have a dakota and my wife has a mustang (metric). Right now they have a huge tool sale going on. check out craftsman.com, they have some online tool specials you won't find in the stores and some items you'll never find stocked in the stores.

I've got a set of craftsman screwdrivers i've had for 10 years and a standard wrench set i've had for 7.

Also, home depot has their husky brand and lowes has their kobalt brand - i don't own any of these but hear they are good.

you can also check out northern tool, might be some stores in your area - they have thier own brand - northern industrial.

The sam's in my area carries a cresent set thought i don't recall the price.

look for a local farmers market or auction type location. You can spend a few weekends digging through boxes and such and find a bunch of tools cheaply! Lots of Craftsman, Husky, Snap-on, MAC. Go early though because they move ;-)

Craftsman are good, wrenches suck in my opinion though. Keep your eyes open. Good deals around holidays, etc. I waited until the right time and got a smoking deal. You are doing good if you are paying 50% of the piece count - 200 piece set for $100. I waited until Fathers Day with another special offer and I applied for my Craftsman card to. I got a $619 box for $475.

I agree, Jag. Their combo wrenches just love to go on the nut easily... and jump off just as easily my f'ing finger! But, their 6 point sockets are good and when you break one in your air gun... oops. Nevermind ;-)
