Just recently the fuel gauge has stopped working in my 93 Dakota Sport 4x4. My first thought is the sending unit has gone out, but the low fuel light still works properly. Do these functions work off of separate units or has my gauge just died? Please help.

My '92 gauge also died, but the light works. Give me a few days, I have the wiring diagrams on the shops computer, just haven't had time to sort through them. At least we'll know if it's in the sending unit or in the gauge cluster.

the fuel guage on my '95 CC 4x4 went out once and is now on the fritz. My low fuel light still works and did when the guage was out the first time. I also fill up with i've gone about 250 miles so I know I won't run out of gas.
The first time, it was the float in the tank, they had to drop the tank to replace it.

It's the sending unit, I had the same problem with my 94, romoved the tank, pump/filter/regulator/sending unit messed with the contacts now it works fine. Mine is a 4x4 with skid plates it was a bitch getting the skid plate off they put it on before the bed two of the bolts you need to get to are on top. I welded nuts on top of the bracket and can now get to everything from below.

According to my Snap-On wiring diagram, my '91 Dak 3.9 4x4, Three wires go to the sending unit. One is gray, this is the source & usually supplies 5 volts for a reference. The other two are Dark Blue wires, one with a Red tracer (the 'empty' side), the other with a Yellow tracer (the 'full' side). As the tank approches empty, resistance between the grey and red tracer drops, so the voltage on the red tracer wire goes up as the tank empties. Conversly a full tank lowers the resistance between gray and yellow tracers, or the voltage on the yellow tracer goes up with full tank.
To test your wiring, you need to gain access to the wiring to the pump. You don't have to drop the tank, just find the wiring on the frame rail. Using a short piece of wire, cross the gray and Blue/Yellow wires together. The gauge should read full. If not, you have a gauge or wiring problem. If it does, your sending unit is faulty.
