Hi, im not worry's aout the back for now but what does it take to remove my 4wd components in the front end? I just want a sold axle to convert it to a 2wd....it sounds stupid but i am far to deep into customizing my truck to sell it and switch to a 2wd. Thanks in advance to anyone who has advice.

What exactly are you trying to do and why?
Lowering the truck or for more MPG?

It's really pretty simple. Just remove the differential and the half shafts. Leave the spindles where they are, they will work fine. You don't need to replace it with a straight axle unless you really want to.

That should save you some bux. Just take stuff, don't replace it with anything, and sell the parts for more customizing stuff.

You might have to change your springs, since you now have less sprung weight. But you were going to do that anyway.

Im looking to loose weight. The truck is already lowered 6 in the
rear and 5 in the front, since it was a 4x4 it now sits like an rt
with a small drop. Its just so damn heavy. If i knew i was going
to go this route with my tuck (mods etc.) i would have got a
2wd.

I am not sure on the Dakota but most Chry. cars with this setup (FWD axles) use the outer CV joint to hold the wheel bearing together. So you may have to leave it in and bolted but you can remove the rest of the shaft.
You will need the right Transmission and driveshaft to eliminate the transfer case.
If you aren't going to eliminate the transfer case then I wouldn't bother with the rest IMO.

Looking for that last tenth huh?

easily done, just find a 2wd in salvage, snatch its spindles, and there ya go, no worrys about bearing issues.
If you really want to convert, it'd be best to do it right the first time, just remover everything that has to do with the front axle, and replace it with 2wd parts.
I agree, if you don't get that transfer case, you're leaving most of the weight still in the truck..... Nowadays, it MIght be in your best interests to think about a possible trade.... it gets pretty expensive doing this kinda thing, and who knows what all issues you're bound to have with electronics, and other ghosts that might pop up after you're done...

Why on earth would anyone want to screw up a 4X4
in the first place?

Sell it outright to someone that wants a 4X4 and
use the money for what you want.

If you modify the truck in the way you're thinking
of doing, it won't be worth a nickel if and when
you what to sell/trade it. I know that if a took
a look at the underside, I'd walk away from it.

Like i said in the first place I AM FAR TO INTO CUSTOMIZING THE TRUCK TO SELL IT OR TRADE IT. The truck is already lowered 5 in the rear and 4 in the front. Nobody looking for a 4x4 wants that. It has custom paint, and i have cut pieces out of the engine bay to fit things not to mention all teh other little stuff. I was planning on trying to make it an 4x4 race truck for the better traction (build up the transfer case etc.) But my plans have changed. I want a nice solid suspension and the 4x4 parts are just a bunch of bull%$^& that i dont need. I say this only because i knew i was going to get a post like this:

Im not selling the truck, it is payed for, i bought it for teh soul purpose of draging it out. I am building up a 408 supercharged engine right now. While thats out of the truck i wanted to see if i could get some USEFULL information about converting it from a 4x4 to a 2wd.

Matt do you have any ideas about the electronics involved in the 4x4?

Does anyone know if i could go to a salvage yard and take the frame off of a 2wd truck and mount my truck on it?

This is not a random garage prject over the weekend. I have built many engines but im not too knowledgeable in the suspension of a 4x4 vehicle.

not familiar, just a shot in the dark, I've come across trucks that have wiring differences for the 4wd, I'll look into it and get back to you... uhh, what years the Truck?

i don,t no on a 97,but on a 87-94 remove the front housing, drive shaft and you,ll need to leave the outer c/v joint that goes through the wheel bearings, you can remove the rest of the c/v shafts,

you can run it like this until you have your motor[408]are you going carb or mpi?

then when you install the motor change the trans
[remove the trans and transfer then]put in a two wheel drive trans[here you,ll have to firgure if you want a od trans or three speed]
the older o/d trans 89-95 are non electric,no sensors, just a electric lock up convertor amd o.d
witch you can put on a toggle switch

if you go with the 3 speed you have non of the above[and some would say a better trans]

and may be a rear drive shaft

good luck

I might be interested in the housing and axles. Do you know the gear ratio? Could be some extra cash for your project??

Sorry for how long its taken me, I had my foot broken at work, I had an alignment rack lowered onto my foot.... damn it hurt! any ways there aren't too many differences in the wiring, so there shouldnt' be any concerns. I think the indicator and the switch are the main ones... Nothing major, to concern with, as far as I;m seeing from the wiring diagrams, it looks like you're just in to the mechanical differences...

GOOD LUCK!!!!
