Subject: Tailgate Adjustment?
IP: Logged

Message:
I had a spray-in bedliner installed today ('04 Dak). My tailgate is now a bit tight (already removed the rubber 'stops'). Is there a way to adjust the tailgate in the back/forward direction? I need to move the bottom of it out a little bit.

I had the same problem with the spary in linear that I had installed about 6 months ago. What i did was wait about 2 days to make sure that the linear was dry and then I took a file and some sand paper and sanded down the linear in the areas that where causeing a problem. With mine I only had to remove about a 1/16 of an inch. (from the lip of the bed)But be very careful not to be to aggresive with the sand paper. hope this helps

try screwing around with those little plastic bushings where the tailgate hinges are.they pop out when you take your gate off.i filed mine down on one side a bit and now it seems to fit good.

You can adjust the gate by loosening the torx studs (they move in a circle). #42 torx I think. When the winter came here in Montana, I could not close the tailgate until I adjusted the torx bolts.

wakeley - thanks for the tip. i'll give it a whirl tomorrow evening. is there a nut on the back-side of those torx studs? if so, guess i'll have to remove the tail lamp assembly to hold it.

There's no nut. Just loosen the studs, move them, re-tightened and you're all set.

Any ideas about this? I looked at the bottom & didn't see anything obvious. I'm either missing something or the bottom can't be adjusted. What is the proper way to pull off the tailgate?

Removal is easiest with 2 people - open gate, disconnect support cables, angle gate to where it will lift off the stud on the right. Then pull to the right to separate the pin & cup connection on the left.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

There is no adjustment on the bottom. Mine came from the factory with one of the studs too short on one side that enabled the tailgate to slide to that side when open almost hitting the bed. I had to take it to a body shop for a fix under warranty.

Just adjusted my 2000 Quad and I needed a #45 TORX bit. Its the same size as the caliper bolts. Real easy to adjust. Had to move mine rearward.
