Subject: Are the 3.9s that weak?
IP: Logged

Message:
I drove a Quadcab Dakota today - 2002 with a 3.9. Someone please tell me these trucks have more balls then that. This truck was downright pitiful. It wouldn't even powerbrake at all. So slow. Truck is almost new and in good shape too. Granted I drive an R/T, but still...this thing was pitiful. Who the F*** would buy a truck with a gutless V6 in it?

Yup. They sure are. And I'm that F***. It was a good price, it's a decent truck. The question is, who the f*** would buy an R/T? Aparently not enough to keep 'em on the line; They've been dropped for '05.

Some are perfectly happy with the 3.9, but in a heavy 4x4 club cab I really think it's awful. My buddy had the same truck as mine but it was a 6 (Gen3, 4x4, CC, 3.55, 31x10.5" tires). The truck was awful on the highway and had to drop out of overdrive constantly. Pulling onto the highway or out into traffic was lousy. The MPG wasn't any better either because he always had his foot in it. But, in the lighter trucks like the 2wd reg cabs., I am sure it's a nice engine for some folks needs.

Not eveyone needs all the power of a v8, so why spend the money? Personally, I like an engine that loafs along most of the time and has a nice reserve :-) If I could get a diesel dak... yum!

I'm another f*** that bought a V6, couldn't afford the V8. Wish I had an 8 but there's always someone faster. Your R/T can be beaten badly by alot of other vehicles that are stock. Drivers of those cars would think your R/T has no nads either. It's all relative.

Don't get me wrong, the R/T in my mind is a puss...and I own one! It is just that the 3.9 felt very bad...I am talking 4 cylinder weak. Who knows...maybe something was wrong with the truck. I owned a 5.2 Dak, R/T, and drove a 2004 CC w/4.7, but the 3.9 was a bit of a shocker. I never came across and auto that wouldn't powerbrake

thats quite a heavy truck for a v6! especially the "old school" 3.9L! isn't it still rated 175 HP/225 TQ? The 3.9L is great in a RC 2wheel drive dak (I owned a 98 3.9L RC auto 2wd with 3:55 gears) I do have to say though, that a v8 makes the dakota a WHOLE different truck :-) My 00 CC 4x4 4.7L AUTO (3:55 LSD) would EAT my old dak ALIVE :-P (the tranny may have a some to do with that though, as the 45RFE is electronic and reacts faster..)

I'm not knockin' the 3.9L, I just think its a bad choice for a QuadCab! unless your using it for around town transportation. forget towing!!

00 CC Sport Plus 4.7L 4X4 Auto, 3:55 LSD
Flowmaster orig. 40 series (2 chamber) muffler, adjusted tps to .76V, ported TB, home brew intake setup w/K&N filter, more mods to come!!!

Is the 3.9 weak? That depends on what your definition of 'weak ' is (gad, I'm sounding like Clinton...). I moved up from a Nissan 4 cylinder and compared to that little truck, my '95 CC 3.9 was a rocket. Now that I have a Quad cab '03 with a 4.7 (with the 3.55 rear end), the old 3.9 was 'slow' in comparison. My guess is if I tried a 4.7 with the 3.92 or 4.11 rear end, I would think my 3.55 QC was slow. It just depends on what you want from a truck. My 4.7 is WAY too much fun as is.

I have a 3.9l 2000 2wd club cab and it isn't that bad. I tested a 4.7l quad cab and the diff was noticable but nothing mind blowing. I just have to run the v6 harder to get the speed and power I want. I will be adding a few mods to help with power in the near future though.

I guess it's all relative. I have one of those 4x4 club cabs, 4-speed auto O/D with 3.55 axle, and it goes great, lots of power and gets over 20 mpg highway. Works for me.

When I test drorove the 3.9, it didn't seem any quicker than my old 4 banger Toyota. Moving up to the 4.7 was probably the best $600 I ever spent. I know its not a race car; I felt the 3.9 was to weak to be considered a work machine.

P.S. Racecar spelled backwards is racecar ! Off to the races for the weekend now.

KJ - what a dumb thing to say. A machine by definition creates/transfers power, doesn't it? Was I talking about speed? No...I was talking about power. Trucks by defintion need power, otherwise what is the point of having a bed/hitch to haul if you don't have the engine to do it. Reread the post!

Let's see, according to your ignorant statement maybe we should start seeing 4 cylinder gas engines in dump trucks...not about speed right?

I have a v6 club cab and it's a dog...It's very nice to drive early in the morning and everything is tight and peppy but after the engine and tranny warm up it's a total dog...well the truck weighs 5100lbs without the canopy, gas...people and stuff in the back so I guess you can't blame the engine. Just an overall bad design...And no, it's not that good on gas because the poor engine has to work that much harder to make this brick move. I'll never buy a mid-full size truck again with a v6. It's useless for anything other than putting around town.

Depends. The '03s started putting 3.92 gears in all V-6s with Club or Quad cabs. I drove a CC SXT with the 3.9 and I thought it was just fine. I got a better deal on my 2wd CC 2wd V-8, And I love it's power, however.

I have the 3.9 with 5 speed manual in a 2001 fullsize truck and it's so slow that I have little old ladies flipping me off when they pass me. Gets good gas mileage, though. Averages 19 mpg combined city/highway. Highest ever was 22 mpg highway. Pretty good for a fullsize. I really like the truck a lot even though it's pretty slow because it NEVER gives me any problems. Very reliable truck and it will haul a lot too. With a full load on the V-6 doesn't seem much slower than when empty.

After driving a 92 dakota club cab 4x2 with the 3.9 v6 for many years, it has plenty of balls. It is light-years faster than my 93 Chevy K1500 4x4 with the 4.3.

Hey kj, I agree, trucks are built to haul crap. When I want to go fast, I get my '66 Charger out.
