Subject: What could this be?

Message:
I have an 01 Dakota Quad Cab 4.7L Sport with just over 36,000 miles on it. Last night I went to go out after work and the truck started up just fine but when I put it into gear and released the brake I went about 3 feet and felt like I hit a curb. I get out chek all the tires and their is nothing in front of them so I back up and go about 3 feet and feel like I hit a curb again. I don't hear anything unusual, and the engine is running fine. It feels like when you put a stick in the tires of a bike and then the stick hits the forks and the bike comes to a quick stop. Could this be the upper ball joints have given out? Or the transmission slipping? Any ideas would be great. Thanks

Neither the upper ball joints nor the transmission slipping would cause the vehicle to stop after 3 feet, release and repeat. Does the truck work in reverse okay? Did someone jam a rod in a U-joint, so it can't flex? Transmissions don't break while stopped for 12 hours, they break trying to move something they shouldn't. And the upper ball joints, when they break the front wheel doesn't sit straight up anymore, it tilts in on a bad angle (you'd see it!).

No, this doesn't sound serious, but somethings obviously wrong. Possible someone jammed something in a U-joint somewhere, or your joint has partially seized up. Also possible that, if equipped, the rear brake shoes have delaminated and are getting jammed between the anchor point and the brake drum (effectively slamming on the rear brakes). There's the remote possibility of rear differential failure too.

Quick check; Jack up the rear of the truck (I assume it's 2wd) in neutral and spin the rear tires by hand. If they spin okay, start the truck and CAREFULLY put it in drive, with the rears still airborne. SLLOOOOWLY release the brakes and see if the rears lock up, or turn freely. If they spin, the problem is up front. If they lock, it's in the back.

Once you've figured out where it's binding up, you can proceed with fixing it, or post and I can help further. If you decide just to have it towed to a garage, let us know what they found.

Good luck,

Thanks for the info. It does the same thing while in reverse. It runs for about three feet and feels like it hits someting. I will check out the things you mentioned and see if I can find any thing before towing it to the dealer.

I vote for what Noltz said on the brakes. Drums may be out of round. That happened to me, and rear axle bearing was damaged. Rear brakes would seize.

Well I had it towed to the dealership and they said that it was a wheel bearing that was causing the problem. This sucks because the warranty ran out August 8th and I have 36,351 miles on it. Thanks for your help.
