I had the rear bumper replaced on my '98 Dak last week.
This morning, I find the tailgate appears locked. The handle feels just like one of the doors when they're locked.
What's this involve?

It sounds like you were hit in the rear or other accident. There is no lock on the tailgate. It sounds like the rods that operate the catches must have come out. You need to open up the tailgate and fix the rods. I am not sure how to do it though.

have had my tailgete handle off to paint. With a taped scru driv GENTLY get under bottom edge of trim plate around hdl. push up tward top of gate while pyiyng out (toward you) this will release trim,you now can access the clips that lock release rods to handle if further disasembly req loosen the 3 screws on inside center to remove handle assy. maybe the latch release rods are loose and not tripping the latches
