First post here and I want to say I've been addicted to this site since I've found it a couple weeks ago.

I'm a proud owner of a 97 Dak 4x4 3.9l. Not long ago it was all stock until one day my exhaust system rotted out on me. Looking around online for some new exhaust parts I came across this site, and it was this site that put the idea in my head to install a catback system. I did just that. Now I want to start in on all the other mods I read about on here going next with a cold air intake. I see tons of discussion on this topic about different styles, locations and actual performance achieved from the mod. I myself like to see the numbers for myself and not just feel them.

I'm an owner of a laptop as well as a Palm hand-held. I'm very interested in recording my trips and trending various values before and after different mods. Because I am a "former" mechanic and now in the trade of automation and control, I'm not interested in spending a boatload of cash into software programs, cables and connectors.

Please share if anyone out there has some nice options, maybe some freeware, shareware, instructions to make your own cables or any alternate ways to keep cost down as much as possible.

Yup, good software and connector from obd-2.com. I have one of them myself, and works pretty good on giving you your codes, clearing them out, and gauge readings, as well as some other stuff

Thanks for the feedback. I've seen this one posted in numerous areas. Thats enough proof for me. Looks like about 122 bucks for the whole deal? Thats sound pretty good compared to a code scanning tool with just a few blinky lights for in 80 buck range. Beats the heck out of my Mac Tool Prolink 9000 I bought over 10 years ago for almost 1000 bucks thats rendered pretty much as useless.

What I think you're talking about is Datalogging. This is one expensive option, but has a 'techie cool' factor that I love.

I'm all for installing gauges to monitor what's up in the engine compartment, but adding power-enhansing parts to our V6's is a futile effort at best. I too own a 4x4 3.9, albiet a '91. Hook up a transmission temperature gauge, put in a nice stereo and just drive it. Want a fast truck? Start with a V8.

Cheers!
