I recently hooked up a used U-haul Activator II brake controller to my 00' dak. It doesn't have a tow package so I had to splice into one of the tail light wires on the brake box next to the brake pedal. When the trailer is hooked up and the brake pedal is engaged the trailer brakes lock up. I don't know if I wired it up wrong or if the controller is bad. The controller is adjustable, but when it is adjusted anywhere above zero it shows an "Er" (I'm guessing this means error) and the brakes lock up. I'm going to get a new brake controller this weekend to see if that is the problem. Any input would be appreciated.

It sounds like a controller problem to me. When
you put the brakes on, a full 12 volts is going to
the trailor brakes hence, locking the system up.

I would say a new controller would fix you right
up.

I was having the same thought, but I like to have a second opinion. Thanks for the input.

Yup, sounds like a controller problem to me to. That should be a time delay controller, and only apply the brakes to the level you set. So, unless you have a very light trailer, you should not get lock on the lowest setting.

That said, if you are going to do a lot of towing, take that crappy controller back, and go to rvwholesalers.com and buy the tekonsha prodigy. It is an inertia driven proportional brake controller that applies the brakes in proortion to how quickly you are decelerating. It cost a little more than most, but it will take out the jerky feeling you get when pulling a trailer with electric brakes.
