Subject: Rear End Whine
IP: Logged

Message:
I have about 155K miles on my 97 dakota 4WD V6. I just started getting a whine from the back end. I can only hear it on the highway when I hit about 62-63 MPH. It will last a few seconds and stop for a while and then come back. It seems to only happen at a constant highway speed. The whine will always stop the instant I take my foot off the gas. Any ideas what the problem could be. I've never had a whine until recently.

I had a similar situation in a 94 F150, it started at highway speeds only and would only be audible when throttle is applied. It got worse and worse over a 2 week period. Ended up finding out that my carrier baaring and spindle gears were shot. $1500 the whole rear end gearing later (the metal shavings of the shot bearing fubar'd everything, I found what was wrong. So I ate the bill and went to a dodge dealer the next week. Been driving my 03 QC 4x4 ever since. :)

In other words, get it checked out SOONER rather than later, and save yourself the money of any subsequent damage that may occur..

I am planning on changing the axle fluid Saturday and I will take the differential cover off to clean everything out good. What should I be looking for when I get in there? What needs to be checked? I am broke and I really have to take care of this myself.

Id bet its the pinion bearing and its something you may want to have done by a pro if you have never attempted one before. If you see metal fleck in the fluuid when you drain it you have a bearing goign for sure and you will want to address it before you smoke the gears and have an even more expensive problem on your hands.

Is it at all possible that it is the really old fluid in my axles causing the whine, or is that just wishful thinking?
