Well, well…Chrysler can be ‘sneaky’. Like most of you, my 2003 C.C. R/T developed the well documented ‘sloppy’ and ‘poppy’ feeling steering wheel. You know, you add a little gas and feel a ‘nudge’ in the steering wheel. You brake, and again feel the same.

Well, I took my R/T in to my dealer last week and had the front-end guy go for a test ride with me. He came back, put it on the hoist and after checking the Intermediate Shaft, the part that connects the rack and pinion to the steering column----well, it had excessive play.

They (the dealership) ordered the shaft and the next day I was scheduled in for the RE and RE.

I picked up the truck yesterday afternoon, and man-o-man….folks----NIGHT AND DAY!

No more ‘bumps’ and ‘taps’ coming from the steering wheel. No more sloppy feel/input from the steering wheel as well.

An observation: The new replacement Intermediate Shaft is TWICE THE BULK and WEIGHT when compared to the factory-installed original. It also has a VERSION 2 tag on it. Folks, it (the yoke) is massive!

It suggests yet again, that Chrysler will NOT acknowledge their under-engineered crap assembly-line parts, but will replace under warranty the offending part with a much beefier---properly spec’d for the application part as in my new shaft.

If any of you are having those popping/tapping sensations through the steering wheel or the brake pedal, take your Dakota in and demand that they replace the INTERMEDIATE SHAFT on your steering linkage/column with the new updated VERSION 2 part.

Cheers!

I am experiencing a very light popping noise "feel" in the steering wheel on my 03 4x4 QC. I took it in today and with no proding from me they found the Intermediate Shaft to be bad. The new one will be in next Tuesday. My point is, good post!

Is the intermediate shaft they put on these trucks made of playdoh? All I ever read about here is people having their steering intermediate shafts replaced. I'm on my third one already, and I have only 7500 miles on the truck.

It never ends....

.....I just came back from a long road-trip, and it seems that I merely replaced one problem in my steering for another.

While the new Intermediate Shaft ***DID*** remove the 'tapping-nudge-feeling' coming from my steering wheel, it has caused another....

....I now have a strong SHUDDER/FIBULATION from my steering wheel after any size of road bump, crack, rail-way crossings, etc. It shudders side-to-side.

I took a look at the new I. SHAFT and could easily flex the rubber coupler by hand. Now I am thinking that they went to a much more 'softer' rubber composition, that is acting like the effects of a RUBBER BAND to amplify movement.

I hit a bump, and the rubber separator that is in the middle of the I. SHAFT torques---and then sends that movement up through the Steering Column.

This sucks!

I now have a 'loose--many miles' feel to my steering and steering input.

I am booking another appointment today, and back the 2003 goes until this sh*t is dealt with.

I'm not amused......

I only traded one problem for another it seems.

If anything changes for the better, I shall surely report it to the forum.

I'm experiencing similar issues with my '03 QC but not exactly what you guys are mentioning. When I turn the wheels all the way to the left of right and give it a little gas the front end makes a popping noise that can be felt through the steering wheel. YOu think the Intermediate shaft is to blame? I need to take it in for the wiper blade recall anyway so I guess I should make an appt. soon.

I had the same shudder and loose feeling in the steering wheel going over bumps after my first intermediate shaft replacement at 3500 miles. Brought it in at 4000 miles and they replaced the intermediate shaft again and the shudder was gone. According to the 04 service manual, whenever they loosen the bolts that fasten the intermediate shaft to the rest of the steering column, they aren't supposed to retighten them. Instead, they're supposed to replace them with brand new bolts. After my first shaft replacement, I noticed from the wear on the bolts that they reused the old bolts. I told them about it, and they made sure they put new bolts on with the 2'nd shaft replacement.

I found out that the new REVISION 2 I.Shaft is the same one installed on the 2005 Dakota.

A new one (second one) solved my Steering Wheel shudder. It seems there was a burr on the slider shaft on the first one. The second took out all play from the steering, did away with that pulse feeling in the steering wheel and the brake pedal, and all is good now.

We have ignition!

:)

I see some of you are getting them replaced under warranty, but whats the going price for those of us out of warranty? Any way to avoid that crazy dealer price?

Tried rockauto.com the other day. They don't list it. Saw another site that only listed them for 2001 and newer.

I just got my shaft from partszoneonline.com. It appears that the part number listed above, is for a 4WD intermediate shaft. Of course, I didn't open the package up until after they had closed for the day, so I'm losing another day in the repair of this issue. The shaft I received today does NOT go through the firewall, it would get bolted under the hood only. I requested the 2WD part number from those guys. Am I missing something?

So they FINALLY got the right part number, and the price is $50 higher. Truck is STILL not fixed, 6 days after the original shaft was delivered. I'll post the correct p/n when it arrives, so maybe I can help someone avoid the same mess I am going through. They're supposed to Fed Ex me the new shaft.
