i have 3.55 open diff rear end on a 4x4 99 pickup... it has 80,000 miles on it and just recently between 35 and 55 mph i now have my rear end wine.. and its getting louder... so i am gonig into the dealer to get aftermarket brakes put on for free, so should i have them replace the rear diff fluid while they are at it? is that all it usually takes?

if it's noticable to one side of the axle (like left wheel or right wheel) it's probably an alxe bearing... if not, probably the pinion bearing.

I just finished doing both wheel bearings and seals on my 98 Dak. The parts are cheap enough (less than $10 for each side). I borrowed a slide hammer with a bearing end and it took about 2 hours for both sides. If its the pinion bearing, then you will require some professional help as this requires tools to set the pinion depth and backlash adjustment.

Mine was whinning about 6 months ago also. Ended up going to dodge and getting a small bottle of friction reducer. Put that in and the sound disappeared.
