Hi all,

Got a few questions about my 2001 QC SLT Dak I was hoping someone could help with.

1.
Engine Code P0442 - Bad Gas Cap?
I took it to the dealer I bought it from (used from a toyota dealer, still under 30 day warantee) and they apparantly took it to the local dodge dealer. They came back saying bad gas cap, replaced it, no big deal. The light wasn't out theough so I posted here asking how to reset it. I did the battery disconnect thing and it went out. However, its now back on. I am almost positive the gas cap was screwed on properly. What else could be wrong that would cause this code to come up.

2. Strange rubbing/clicking sound in reverse
Twice now, I have heard a strange clicking sound (seems to come from underneath in the back somewhere but not sure) when I was backing up while turning into a parking spot. It doesn't happen all the time. Today when it happened, I was backing up, sound was there, moved forward to align myself, started backign up again, sound was gone. Is this likely tires rubbing on something? Everything is stock on the truck.

3. Minor engine roughness
Is it normal for the engine to run slightly rough at times. I don't notice it all the time but sometimes it doesn't seem perfect. When sitting in the truck you can feel the constant smooth vibration of the engine but sometimes, you get the occasional twitch of the truck when it seems like the engine misses or something. I haven't seen any codes come up for it though. Should I be concerned.

4. Am I getting my codes right?
I'm trying the trick where you hold down the trip odometer and on-off-on-off-on the key switch. That's how I got the engine code originally. What I saw was that the gauges did a full run through testing all the displays and everything. After doing this it would display the code in the odometer. However, I tried this again since the light was reset. The first time I did it, I saw just the code display without doing the check of the gauges. I did it again and got the check of the gauges but no code. Can someone clear up what I am doing wrong or maybe point me to some specifics that will make sure I am doing it right.

Also, what if there is more then one thing wrong and thus should have more then one code? Am I only going to see the latest one? Do I have to go to the dealer to get a full list of the codes?

5. Vent blower
My dash vents don't blow air the way I expect. The AC works, but it's not ice cold. I was thinking it might need a little recharge (on that note, any suggestions or things I should stay away from?). However, the vents don't seem to blow very hard either. Is that normal? I notice the side vents don't blow even close to as hard as the center ones, even if I shut the vents for all the others. Is there something I should look into to increase vent pressure? Maybe there is something blocking the passage or the blower is going out?

Thanks for all the help guys!
Jason

For question one, I had that problem on my '00 Dakota with the 4.7. At around 10K miles the check engine light came on. They told me it was the gas cap and that I must not have tightened it. OK I said, but it came on the very next day. I told them i have not even had the cap off again, so they checked it over. Turned out to be a bad hose on the engine. The hose had a small slit and was sucking in air. You may have a similar issue. For question 3, I don't know what engine you have, but the 3.9 does have normal low speed idle roughness. Nothing harsh, but it does grumble a bit at idle. From what I have read and experienced with my dad's 98 and my 02, we both have low speed idle roughness.

Thanks daksprtplus02

I'll talk to the dealer about the hose idea.

Regarding the engine... its a 4.7 liter and I wouldn't be surprised if there was supposed to be low idle roughness but I wanted to ask to make sure I wasn't ignoring something that was bad!

Just to let you know you are not crazy, I've had problem #2 on my truck. I've yet to be able to find it as when I stop to take a look, the sound goes away. It is really weird.

#2 - remove rear drums and make sure all brake pad locating hardware is in good shape. Also check u-joints.
#3 4.7 should have a smooth idle - possible culprits - dirty TB, dirty or bad IAC, bad TPS.
#4 Checking the codes also clears them in my truck, might be why you didn't get a code the second time you checked.
