I have a 2003 4x4 4.7 auto dakota with 23,000 miles. At slow speeds when i take a moderate turn i feel a small clunk in the steering wheel when i brake or accelerate. This occurs when i take a left or right hand turn. It does not happen when the wheels is straight. Any ideas before I take it into the dealer ship this week.

I had the exact same thing with my truck. They replaced it under warranty. The part was called "coupling, lower steering column shaft".

Have the dealer check the lower Control arm bolts for correct tightness.

I had the same problem, they started replacing the steering column, then the sway bar bushing, then when it finally got so loose, my steering wheel would shift, what i mean is that it would be straight then all of a sudden it would be 45 deg from center. Wooo, this was scary.

Had my steering intermediate shaft replaced 3 times in the 7500 miles since I bought the truck new five months ago. I still hear the clunk every once in a while--it usually happens about 20-30 seconds after I start up the truck, when I'm pulling out. It mostly happens when I'm turning, but it's happened a few times with the truck going perfectly straight.
I've already decided that I'm trading it in on the 05 Tacoma as soon as it's in showrooms this fall, so for now I'm just living with the clunk. I was going to wait a year or two to trade it in, but at this point I don't care how much money I lose on the trade. I just want to get outta Dodge. This truck is my only transportation, and since I've bought it, it seems like all I do is bum rides off people because it's in for service every other week for one thing or another. I need something dependable, and I found out the hard way that Dodge isn't it.

I had my second Dakota 2005 model year Intermediate Shaft put on. The first one was found defective right from the get-go.

The second one is working fine and has eliminated the clunk/pulse/tap/-whatever way you feel it 'thing' from my brake pedal and steering wheel.

The solution works! Have them put in the much larger, beefier VERSION 2 I.S. on your steering.

Cheers!
