I may have seriously hurt my 02'Quad Cab 4.7. On the way home our road is flooded. I slowed down and turned the selector to 4 and the poor truck started making popping noise, serious popping loud noises. Still makes noise in 2wd. Good news, I made it home in 2wd, barely, with the posi rear. What have I done???!!!!!

I have put my 99 4x4 in 4x4 while rolling and it never has done that. I the manual it says that you can do that up to speeds like 45mph or so, and should be able to take it out at any speed(if I rember right). If you still have warrantee left on it you may want to bring it in.

Thanks Luke,

It is going to the dealer on Monday, We were able to get the 100K on the drive train. I have the feeling it was not the fact I fliped the switched too soon. My left bearing has been making some noise so who knows. I will post the result.

Just curious. It wasn't 4 wheel low you were switching to was it?
You can't do that until you're stopped and in NEUTRAL.

4 Low can be engaged if you're doing up to 5 mph according to my '01 and '04 owners manuals. For both Daks the manual recommends you be in motion when engaging either 4 High or 4 Low.
I've dropped into 4 Low from 2 wheel drive between 3 and 5 mph many times never had the popping sound Kenster describes.
I'd be interested to hear what the problem is I traded my '01 in because of drivetrain problems, seals replaced every 4,000 to 6,000 miles and rear gears @ 44,800 miles.
I swear the truck was cursed but it never died on the road.

Thanks for the input, its done at the dealer, they could not find anything wrong. Go figure. I do have a bad left front wheel bearing going out. Still rolls, just make a noise when in a curve. Wheel bearing not covered in Warranty, go figure. I have not picked up the truck yet, but when I do I will 4 wheel the piss out of it to make sure all is good. It sounded like something binded up. Thanks again for the input. Will update.
