Subject: Help 99 R/T Steam Like Smoke?
IP: Logged

Message:
Yesterday after driving my 99 Dakota R/T home from work...
I noticed something after WOT, I had the smell of coolant in the truck. Then shortly after that I had a steam like smoke coming in from the vents, and it continued to enter the truck through the vents... Truck was running at regular temperature... coolant was not low... what would be the cause of this? any ideas?

Ya your heater core is propably gone. You could check the hoses going to the heater core and make sure the clamps are tight and no anti-freeze is getting in that way.

Boy, does that bring back memories. I had a sh1tbox in college (AKA Mercury Lynx). The heater core went out in winter. Not only did I not have heat, but it left a film of antifreeze all over my windows. I had to deal with the frost and ice on the windows and the smudges of trying to wipe off the crap. It was great fun running down the road in zero degree weather with your head hanging out just so you could see. Gotta love those first cars. It makes me appreciate my Dak that much more. :)

in my case there is still plenty of heat when the climate control is set to heat, and the AC is still cold to.
so i would think that the heater core is working ok, and this all happened right after WOT, so I am guessing with the increased pressure the coolant got in. sound right?

just keep an eye on that coolant level and temp gage 'til you can fix it.

It sounds Like you may just have a pin hole in your core. You could try to put some stop leak stuff in your rad and might seal the hole up, but this would be a temp fix. A new core core should not be that much, it is putting it in that is expensive if you take it to a shop. If you have a good tear down book you could do it yourself. It would probably take you the better part of a day to do it and you should not require any special tools.
