i am thinking about buying this 97 dakota regular cab V6 auto 2wd. but it has 130k on it with no work done except the brakes and battery. i am hoping that i can get another 10k out of it without any problems, what do you think? i bet the tranny, tie rods, ball joints, all need to be replaced.

All depends on how it's been treated, just like any other automobile...

I have a 97 CC SLT 5.2L auto with over 134K miles, 80K+ of those hard-driven with several bolt on mods (intake, exhaust, rockers, etc). Haven't had to replace tie rods, ball joints, any of that. Did have to do the intake plenum gasket which tends to leak by the time you reach 100K miles, M1 intake manifold fixed that problem. I don't burn any oil whatsoever, tranny shifts just fine, and I hit the Rev limiter quite often :-)

Ken, if you hit the rev limiter "quite often" with your automatic, somehow that doesn't seem like the tranny shifts fine. Usually that would mean it is slipping :)

I have a 1988 Dak 4x4 3.9 with 300,000km on it (about 188,000 miles) and I have done the brakes, water pump, valve cover gaskets and U-joints, thats it. I also do regular maintenance. My truck does not get alot of abuse, it is mostly driven to work and back. I do take it off road for hunting and fishing outings.
But it is like Ken said it depends on how the truck has been treated. Be sure to have a mechanical inspection done it, that will give give a really good idea.

I can hit the rev limiter with my auto (if I hold it in 1st or second manually :) (00 4x4 cc 4.7L) (6200 RPMS)

If I just mash it, it shifts at 5500. thats NO FUN! it pulls all the way up to the rev limiter :-)

Liek everyone says, it's all about the maintenance = I've had a 98 Sport Dak (318) since new and other than one bad ball joint and a power window that just started popping off the track, I've had no problems whatsoever. I do change all fluids regularly and keep it in good shape overall - if the tranny fluid was never changed in it you might have some issues there....
If you do a lot of high-speed driving I'd recommend a tire upgrade - Pirelli Scorpion Zero's are the best, but a bit pricey....

Nah, hits the rev limiter cause I'm driving it in 1, not D, and not shifting early enough :-)

The Dakota I am thinking about buying has 116k with no previous major work done on it. My buddy a Dodge owner and lover mentioned about gaskets and other things going wrong at about 90k. I am just wondering about how long before I will have to do some work on it. Thanks for the help.

I've got an '00 QC with over 150K. Other than regular maintenance:

Waterpump, T-stat, Hoses @ 120K

Upper Control Arm Bushings - Passenger Side @ 100K

Front Drivers Side Bearing Hub @ 80K This was only because of accident.

Mine has been a great truck.

I bought a new '98 Sport, 2WD, 318, 5-speed, short bed, standard cab. Fortunately, I purchased the best extended warranty available along with the truck. Belly pan gasket went somewhere around 30k. The entire front suspension self destructed around 60k (ball joints, control arm bushings, both front wheels bearings, inner tie rod ends). They replaced the steering rack because it has the tie rod ends included with the assembly (it was easier to do and the factory was paying). The bearings in the 9.25 posi rear went around 70k. The metal debris circulating in the oil killed everything else in the rear. They replaced everything but the housing and the axles. All of the above was covered under warranty which expired at 75k miles. I traded it in at about 80k before I had to start paying out of my own pocket. This truck wasn't abused, raced or driven off-road.
Before this aforementioned nightmare, I had a new '89 Dak, V-6 automatic that I ran over a 100k with no problems whatsoever except an incurable valve cover leak. So I guess it's just the luck of the draw.

My 1997 Sport, v6, Auto is now up to 285,000 miles. Through out the years the front end sucks but the motor runs great, nothing seems to wrong with the Trans. I replaced the Alt., starter (the new after market one has lasted longer), power steering hose, water pump and fuel pump and that's it. Like everyone is saying maintain your vhc and it will last
