Subject: Persistent gear whine

Message:
I have an '00 RT that I bought about 3 months ago. When I bought it, it had a rear end whine about 40 and again around 70 mph. The used car dealer sent it to a shop to have it fixed. They have replaced the ring and pinion set TWICE with a Dodge supplied ring and pinion set, and the whine still persists, only now it also whines between 60 - 70 mph. I'm at the end of my rope. What do you think can still be causing this persistent whine? Could it actually be something other than the ring and pinion? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

From past experience with rear gears I would hazard a guess that it's the backlash setting.

They shouldn't have had to replace it twice if it was installed properly the first time. What I'm trying to say is that it's not the Ring and Pinion, rather the installation that was botched.

um, that was a gay joke....

anyways, did they happen to replace the bearings? those can do the same annoying noise too, but my vote is on poor backlash setting. thats more likely to have a certain range, whereas bearings usually make noise all the time, but still, nothing is always as it seems. fuel pump noise would be constant, BTW.

The Dude is right, if it was done once properly then it would have been fixed.... try another shop...
