Subject: purpose of the speed sensor?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi, while changing out my rear wheel bearings and seals, I noticed that my differential has what looks to be a toothed ring that circles the ring gear. On top of the pumpkin is a plug for what seems to be a sensor. I tried to look it up in the Haynes book (what a waste) and seem to think its a speed sensor.
Does anybody know what this is, and what its for, and what would happen to the truck if I took it off?
just wondering...

thanks

Yeah, you would lose the ABS and speedo, I think you would also loose your transmission shifting, would be stuck in 1st gear.

I dont have a shop manual for the Dakota, but if I did, I would'nt need to post questions like now would I?
It blows me away how some people can be so friggin nasty because of the anonymity of the web. Would you talk to your neighbour like that? Your wife, or brother? I dont think so.

I asked a legitimate question, based upon my own experience in working on various vehicles, none of which are as new as my Dak (which is a 98) and none of which ever had a computer. I would never think of ripping anything out without thorough research first. I figured that this site might be a good starting point, before I go and pester the local Chryco dealership. But with attitudes like I have seen here, it makes me wonder what some of you people are thinking!
By the way, dont ever ask a question that you dont already have the answer for, because there is going to be somebody ready to belittle you.

to those who are being legitimate, thanks, the others can go ....

it senses de-celeration (rear wheel speed) so the rear brakes don't lock up - hence ABS speed sensor

just replaced mine because it died. so without it i imagine you would have the same symptoms i had:
brake light and abs light stayed lit after starting, no speedo till i hit 30mph, what felt like no abs/computer assist for the rear brakes.
plus, you'd have a hole in your differential!
:)

OK, so is the toothed ring of the speed sensor attached to the ring and carrier? In other words is it a seperate part from the carrier? I am still trying to figure out how to put in an LSD (see other post) that is from an older Chrysler Sure-Grip. I will need to get 27 spline axles to replace the 29 splined ones I have now. But, if the speed sensor is integral to the carrier, I am out of luck. HOWEVER if it is a seperate unit, which bolts to the ring gear to the carrier, I am back in business.

glad to see you lashed out/back at 'anohter mark' for his senseless assault. the PURPOSE of this place is to gather info, and improve knowledge of all of our trucks... so we don't f them up.. it was a decent question, and better to have asked than to not... right?

my thoughts on that sensor are that it is there to piss me off. its what also limits the speed to 115, from the factory. from what I understand, and I may be wrong, it's a hall effect sensor, which basically is a magnet, that pulses when a tooth of the ring passes by it. I haven't looked into my R/T's differential yet, but I ( and this is where MY mind may be wrong) but I think it either uses a seperate toothed ring, or the ring gear itself. either would work, and from the outside it looks as if its directly in line with where the ring gear is. someone with this knowledge correct me if Im wrong.....
why are you downsizing spline count? you'll loose overall axle strength doing so... on these carriers its a pain in the a$$ to get the diff in, you might need a case spreader, which is hard to find, and kinda expensive..... JUST BE SURE YOU get the backlash right, or you'll destroy your gears, or at the least have a lot of annoying humming from your trucks rearend...

I spent the afternoon bugging the tech's at my local Chryco dealership in regards to the sensor. It is a separate piece, but to transfer it to the older style carrier would be an expensive task. My thoughts are that I have wasted my $200 on a SureGrip that will never see the ass end of a Dakota (at least my 98). Right now I am so messed up and depressed, I am just going to sit tight till I get over it.

Now saying that, while at the dealership, I did spy the new Dodge Magnum with 5.9l hemi sitting in the front display area. Lets see, pulse quickening, heart rate somewhat higher, eyes no longer need glasses when viewing it. And its a station wagon (for want of a better term) - that might be a justification for the wife!!! who knows.

thanks guys/girls for your answers and support. I think this time, its not going to go anywhere.

John
