Yea, yea,
read all about them on the boards, but still have a few questions. Ok, the guage in the cab does work......sort of. If I fill the tank completely up with gas, the gas gauge WILL GO to full like it's supposed to. Then as I put miles on the truck, the gas gauge slowly goes down like it's supposed to, but it "sticks" at just over 3/4 of a tank. It never drops below 3/4 of a tank.
To make matters worse, the low fuel warning light NEVER comes on. It has stopped since the gauge/sending unit went bad.
So, the fact that the guage works somewhat as it's supposed to when the tank is full tells me it has to be the sending unit. Right? Right! But here's the tricky part......since it is partially working, couldn't I just take the old sending unit out of the tank and try to repair it? I've read here:

that you can fix it. However, it wasn't clear to me if they were "fixing" the original bad unit, or modding a new unit so that the repair would not be needed in the future.
Assuming I fix, or replace the sending unit, will that make my low fuel warning light start working again as well? Any help or advice appreciated. BTW, I do not need to replace the fuel pump too. On my DAK, they are seperate. (lucky me)

I have a similar problem, but mine just goes to E. Well, now it's always at E, just jumps a bit. My yellow fuel light turns on, though.
I would imagine it's two seperate problems.
Either that, or you've got a magical engine that stays at 3/4 of a tank. ;-)

Either way 857pop you have to pull the sending
unit out of the tank. I just did the same job in
a 79 AMC Concord. The sending unit is a wire wound
resistor and the tanks float rides on that wire
wound coil. I opened the unit up and IF you can
get the same guage wire, you could rewind it
yourself. I bought a used sending unit from a
bone yard (can't buy new anymore) for 35 bux.
I'd suggest just bitting the bullet and buy a new
unit and have it over with. The job dropping the
tank or removing the pick up box isn't worth
trying to save a buck by trying to *fix* it.
