Subject: Fire in 2001 QC
IP: Logged

Message:

Just last week, a client of my wife's (she's in insurance) 2001 Dakota QC caught on fire. He went over his mothers house to see her, went inside and a few minutes later the truck was burning in her driveway. The truck wasn't running or anything. He bought the Truck in May of this year.

Chrysler is paying for everything including all personal belongings in the truck, but will not disclose what caused the fire. They know it started in the passenger side dash.

I wouldn't be writing this if I didn't have a QC that I bought in June and park under my 2 year old son's bedroom every day. My wife is beside herself over this.

Has anyone else heard anything similar happening.

Thanks

Guess its time to take the fire extinguisher out of the tool box and keep it it the front seat with me. Dont like the sound of it catching fire and not even running.

Our 2000 QC caught on fire on Fri May17th. WHile we were driving it. SO far they said it was a short in a wire in the starter. DOdge has sent an investagator as well as our insurance. OUr warrenty was up 2 1/2 months ago (roughly 39,000 miles) so we will likely end up paying for it. Very little damage though thanks to the people behind us having a fire extinquisher. I am buying one for my car and the truck whenever we get it back.

Here are some pics of the fire in my Ram in February. Total loss. F*cked over by the insurance company because of all the mods. I'm going to get like .10 on the dollar on $30,000 worth of mods although the straight book value on the truck was reasonable. They called my 408 a "rebuilt motor". :)

B1llyW- What happened when your truck caught on fire? I have contacted the NHTSA about ours. I am hoping that it doesn't happen to other people. We lucked out having a fire extinquisher in the car behind us. It could've been a complete loss since the fire dept took a while getting there. We also had just bought a propane tank for the BBQ so it was in the back.

I hope you have better luck with you next truck. Bad thing about extra mods is when it is a total loss insurance won't give you Sh*t.

The cause could not be determined. Too much damage. I had just run an errand during the day at work. Nothing was wrong. I was in my office for about 5 minutes and one of my employees came in and told me it looked like there was smoke coming from my truck. I looked out and though at first it might be steam. Within a minute, no joke, there were flames shooting through what was left of my fiberglass hood. The fire department arrived about 3 minutes after that but it was too late. Bye, bye Dodge. As you can see, it got real hot. This was Feb 11th. I'm still working on the settlement.

Thanksgiving, 2002. Wife, three kids, and dog piled into nice 2000 Dakota Sport crew cab and took off to Montana. Ate dinner in Kellog, ID and the headed back to the freeway. As I headed over the freeway overpass to the entrance ramp, all power was lost to vehicle and within a few seconds, engine was on fire. Threw wife, kids, dog, and belongings out on the road and all we could do was watch it burn. Luckily, a sheriff saw it start and called it in, and within 15 minutes the fire was out - but the engine and front end were toast. Fire chief said it started in circuit box/fuse panel. Anyone heard of this sort of thing happening?? Truck was in great shape, 40k miles, completely stock and only dealer serviced. Bummmer.....

I dont really think this is a problem of all dakotas, but its something to think about. My mom had a mazada that caught on fire, and that was a site to see. Anyways, im glad you and your family are ok. Sorry about the dak. :(

I posted something similar a few months back. When ever I post a TSB or somethng similar the post just get's ignored so I just do not bother to post them any more. My Dad is an Truck Driver and huals frieght to and from Canada. He saw 3 Dak QC's on fire in a 24 hour time period on the interstate! He said they looked rather new 2001-2002 just by apperance. He knows I bought one for the wife and kids so he always keeps his ear out for anything related to my Dodge.

Sorry to hear about your losses. I work for a fire extinguisher company in Ohio. People come in quit often telling us how their extinguisher saved their vehicle. I haven't talked to anyone with a dakota that burnt up yet. Definetly a good idea to have one in your truck. I mounted a 5 pound extinguisher under my back seat. It fits perfectly.

Steve W.,

Holely Toledo! I too park my truck in a closed garage right under my 2 yr olds bedroom!

I have a 01 QC, 4.7, 5spd, SLT interior, with some mods.

I've never really had a problem with my electrical so far. Got a new 5spd @27,000 miles-warranty.

I"m also a volunteer firefighter, and have extinguishers in the garage and kitchen, but not in my truck! May have to rethink this one.

If this is a problem, they HAVE to do a recall, this is some dangerous sh&t!

Thanks for the replies to my post on Saturday - people really do read these things! I checked the board this afternoon after work and found an amazing post by Laura (Subject: Cought on Fire while driving). Her experience was remarkable in that it was very similar to mine and began with a popping in the radio. My radio started popping the day of the fire - basically the radio would quit for a second or so (light on radio would go out and then the speakers would pop when it can back on). I figured it was an aggravation that I would have to deal with until I could get someone to look at it after my trip. I don't recal if the radio popped right before my truck caught fire but I likely had the radio turned down anyway. I will definetly get a fire extinguisher when I get back on the road and would recommend one to anyone after this mess. However, the engine release cable melted so quickly that I doubt we could have got the hood up in time to really do anything.

Off subject (for Glenn in Cour de Alene, Idaho) - we ate at the Silver Spoon at exit 49 (Subway exit - Subway was closed at the time). And I have to say, if you have to experience anything like this, Kellog was the place for it to happen. The sherrif's dept, fire department, and citizens were unbelieveably helpful and kind to us.

Put in Smoke Detector!
IP: Logged

Message:
Put an additional smoke detector in your garage. It shoud be part of a hard wired system so that if it goes off it sets off the other detectors in your house. This should protect you in case a fire breaks out in the garage.

If you don't have a hard wired system I highly recommend that you get one!

No fires in my 01 QC,

But, it sits all night, in a closed garage,
under my 2yr. olds Room!

My house is hard wired with alarm, fire alarm, etc.

But, no sensor in the garage, Under my sons room!!

He's too young to even think about an escape ladder our his window yet, maybe in 6 months.

So, I got a $10 smoke detector, put it in the garage near the house door, and the intercom from his room to ours picks it up nicely.

Funny, I'm a fireman here in Pearland too.
