I know this post will draw alot of criticism but I can't deny the facts. My previous vehicle was 1999 dodge dakota from time to time I would use slick -50 each time i used it I would notice an increase of 2-3 mpg increase in fuel efficiency.I now have a 2001 dodge dakota and had decided not to use slick-50 due to all negative stuff i have read .I like to experiment and I couldn't resist the temptation to try it one more time.I have had my 2001 10 months and always check fuel mileage at each fill up.I always average 18-19 mpg which isn't too bad for a V-6.I went on a road trip through the Smokey mountains this weekend alot of uphill climbs w/OD off part of the time and averaged 22mpg .I am still kinda skeptical about using it due to all the negative stuff about possible engine damage. It seems to me the only way slick -50 could increase fuel efficiency is by reducing friction which is exactly what it claims to do.

I used Slick 50 once in some other car and I never
had any problems. I didn't do a mileage thing,
just wanted to prolong the engine life.

mopar_man, I'm glad I read your post. Looks like
you have put some time into this product before.

And wtf, your the stupid one! Two posts with the
same text? STUPID!

A few years ago, Consumer Reports did a study on various oil additives, including Slick 50. They used them as directed with regular oil changes in city taxi cabs. After a significant number of miles, they took the engines apart.

AFA S-50 goes, they reported 3 things. 1: It didn't reduce engine wear. 2: It didn't harm the engine in any way. 3: It didn't change anything about the operation (mileage, temp, etc.)

It probably wasn't a very accurate test for this product. The makers claim it reduces wear at start up by preventing oil drain off. The taxi engine never gets turned off.

So, it doesn't hurt anything. But it doesn't seem to help, either. And Mark is right, DuPont says don't do it. So why bother?

As I have stated before ... I have made many posts here (search under Slick 50, zMax, MMO, Marvel Mystery Oil) regarding the HAZARDS of using any additives. There are a few good advantages to additives ... but VERY few.

It's the fact that oil chemistry is a science and many hours and lots of $$$ goes into blending oil. To think that an additive maker can come out with something that works in improving the quality of an oil without disturbing the existing oil's chemistry is definitely not thinking about the long term consequences. Chemistry clash is a good reson not to mix differant oils and/or additives to achieve your own "homebrew".

Slick 50's advertised "special ingredient" is teflon. To plate teflon on a metal needs an absolutely clean, high temperature surface, in a vacuum. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that the teflon in slick 50 actually plates the metal surface. In addition the Cf (Coefficient of friction) of Teflon is actually greater than the Cf of an Oil Film on Steel. Also, if the teflon did fill in 'craters' in the steel, than it would fill in the honing of the cylinder, and the oil would not seal the piston rings.

To quote the guy on South Park, "Teflon is BAD"

I know what you guys are saying. Also I am kinda skeptical about using it due to all the negative stuff I have read about it.The fact remains though I have noticed an increase in fuel effiency while using it and I have tried this several times and the increase in fuel effiency goes away shortly after the oil is drained. The only explaination I have for the increase is less friction = better fuel effiency.Although thier claim about protecting for 50,000 miles I think is bogus because like i say the increase goes away shortly after the slick 50 is drained.I guess all things considered it isn't worth the gamble.
