The last several times i have driven my dak, the check gauges light will come on and i will look down and my coolant temp gauge is maxed out at 260. It stays that way for a couple of seconds, and then goes back to normal. This happens about once every time i drive it, sometimes twice. My best guess is that the coolant is low and air bubbles have gotten in and those small, hot bubbles of air goin by the thermonitor are what is causin this to happen.
This is just a guess and i would like to know what yall think about this situation and what it might be.

Does the guage jump to max immediately or slowly climb there?

If its is right away:
What about a flakey temperature sensor itself? Maybe its getting an intermittent bad connection every once and awhile.

What year and motor is your truck? And when it is hot, do you hear your clutch fan roaring? That's an indication that the motor is hot and not a the gauge giving you a false reading. If you ask me, sounds like a sticking thermostat. That is more likely than a bogus gauge.

i have a 99 cc 318 2wd.

I havent seen the guage actually go up, but once the light has come on, it stays at max for about 4 or 5 secs and then goes back below 210 in the next 7 or 8 secs. and i have never heard the fan go crazy, so i dont think the engine is actually overheating.

MoparMadness, you might be right about the motor NOT overheating. Because even if you didn't have a temp gauge at all, a tell tale sign that the motor is hot will be the clutch fan roaring loudly. Faulty gauge or sensor? I'm beginning to think so. Let us know what it is.
