Subject: Loss of Power

My 3.9 engine had lots of power until the Catalytic converter melted. This happened pulling a 24 ft trailer at 80 MPH. HP and torque went down immediately, dealers could not find the problem, and a local Joe replacing the muffler 10 months later told me to replace or throw away the converter. I got back most of the power but not all. Is there something that may have been damaged by not allowing exhaust out freely?

maybe a blown head gasket... if you have antifreeze in your oil, then thats the case.. you can also check for a blown head gasket, by removing your radiator cap (engine cold) start it and let it run... as it warms up and the thermostat opens, watch for a steady stream of small bubbles coming out of the filler neck. how does it run otherwise? does it have a rough idle, or is it hard starting?

just my .02

i'd imagine with the kind of towing its been put through that the transmission is slipping and not putting the power to the ground the way that it once did.

Thanks guys for the feedback to date.
The 3.9 is actually in a 2500 van with 3 sp trans and 4.10 axle. It was a real good tow vehicle for a six( better than a GM 305) Its not the tranny, it's the loss of power from the engine. I cleaned out the inside of the cat after the melt down and most of the power came back but not all. Works better if I let of the gas a little when under full pedal. Any ideas?
