Subject: 04 vs 05 Dakota Quad 4X4
IP: Logged

Message:
Looking to trade my Ram (standard cab, 2wd, 4.7) in for a Quad 4x4 4.7 Dakota, anyone have any opinions on whether to go for the 04 now or wait til the 05 comes out? Personally I prefer the looks of the 04, but if the 05 is technically better, roomier, etc it might be wise to wait..thoughts?

Thanks for the response; I don't want to argue with you, however, I don't feel that's an entirely accurate statement. The '05 model is completely redesigned, new body style, new interior. It may have the same choice of powerplant (3.7 / 4.7) but don't know that it's the same frame, wheelbase or anything else. For all I know the interior is larger, and the frame has been stretched to allow for a longer bed, etc. The extended cab model even looks to have two small inside opening doors. As I stated prior, I much prefer the look of the '04 model, and I think the '05 model is a little too angular and looks more like a Chevy, but if it's superior in other ways it might be worth the wait...

the 05 has a fully boxed frame and overall outer dimensions of the body are a couple of inches longer length and width.

bdl, you are correct. It is a redesign for '05. They have made several claims of a new suspension, etc, but that remains to be seen. On the Gen3's the biggest problem that I've heard of his the ball joints and only time will tell if they have changed them in the '05's or not. DC claimed big changes in the 03's but there's been reports of problems there too. Personally, my 03 4x4 QC has had no problems but then I only have 16k on it.

Personally, I'd recommend holding off for 2-3 months more. By then more solid info will be available on the 05's for you to make a sound decision on. Also, as the year draws to an end better and better deals will be available on the 04's, especially since a new body style is coming and they'll be anxious to rid their lots of the old style. Last year I wanted until October to get my '03 and while I had to search dealer inventories extensively to find my "perfect truck" I was able to do it and they transferred it to my local dealership for purchase. They'll do it for free up to I think 300 miles. I ended up getting my loaded QC for $7400 less than sticker of $31,200 so it worked for me. Maybe not the best deal ever but I was pleased. Sooo, I guess what I'm saying is that it won't hurt you either way to wait a bit. Albeit in a very long winded way. :)

Again, thanks for your replies. The one thing I've got on my mind is the $5000. cash back they're offering for the 04 right now...it's going to end the end of August (of course, just before they get the new model in) but you're probably right; I bet they'll have at least as good a sale later on in the year as they try to get rid of overstock...

I'd buy nothing untill the 05's are at the
dealerships. There will be plenty to 04's to pick
from if the 05's don't suit your likeing..

I'm not so sure on the availability of '04s. I was driving through one of the local dealer's lots last week and only saw 4 Dakotas. They usually have 20-30.

Stock seems to be high in the Seattle area for '04's. I bought my '04 QC last week and I had quite a choice.

I don't like the photos I've seen of the '05's... ugly. I'm also not too keen on buying the first year run of any body style. They need to work out the bugs and perfect it.

I did notice that BBC Dodge up here has two '05 Dakotas showing up in their online inventory complete with VIN and stock number. I've got a call into them to see if they actually have them.

Well... BBC Dodge does not acutally have the '05's yet. They state that the two on their web site are "in bound"...

I currently have an 03 RC and a 01 QC. I think that the 05 model is fugly. Next thing you know they'll be adding plastic parts to it like the avalanche. DC's mods that they keep making to these trucks (ie suspension, steering etc.) keep making it more costly to modify these trucks. I found out that in 2000, after I bought my 2001, that that older lifts wouldn't work due to steering changes. The aftermarket is slow to respond to mods for these trucks for some reason. It took rancho 3 years to come out with a lift for the 2000 plus. Everone I know thinks my two highly modified trucks look great and I get compliments constantly. The same people think the new Dak and Durangos look like crap. What were they thinking at DC. Leave well enough alone. I intend to keep mine until the fall apart. My area is overrun with the old style Durangos but I've only seen two of the new model. No one here likes them and the dealers are having a hard time moving them. Especially since the introduction of the Magnum. I think this body style change is going to cost DC a lot of money, but we'll see. I would suggest if you plan to do mods that you either buy the 2004 or wait a little bit to see how the after market responds to the 2005. If you don't plan to do any mods the 2005 may be for you.

the 05 dakota is available with the 4.7 ho at 250+ horsepower vs 230 on the 4.7 (those three cats killing things cause the 20 cherokee ho was 265) anyways i'd take the rebates and put ho cams/(same intake) in my truck. not an ho engine but helps out, i hope anyways as i've ordered them for mine. i just got a quote on a 04 and it was 3500 rebate on a 2wd and they offered $1000 under invoice for customers who get an internet quote. just my .02
2000 4.7 4x4 awd cc
cold air intake
jet chip
ho cams/intake on the way

Funny how "yeah" dissappeared. I have a 2004 RC and I got an awesome deal on it because the dealer was trying to clear inventory for the 2005's. I will look at the 05 when it comes out, maybe I will trade mine in if I am impressed enough.
