Subject: Electrical problems: HELP!!

I need some assistance. My '97 Dakota, 3.9L, 4x4, automatic has recently been giving me problems with regards to the radio. When I bought it last year, I put a Pioneer CD player in, and it worked fine. But every now and then, the radio would just cut off. All of the displays would work fine, just no sound. Then it would come on all by itself suddenly after a little while. I could live with this problem since it would only be off for a little while.

But now it cuts off and doesn't cut back on after a little while. And here's the kicker: when I jiggle the left power window button, it cuts on for a little while, then cuts back off.

I know it sounds like a short somewhere, so I guess what I'm asking of you guys is if anyone else has had this problem. I need to know where to start looking for the short. I got behind the dash last night and did not see any immediate problems in the plethora of wires back there. My next step is to take the driver door off and check that.

I would be REALLY appreciative if someone could help me out with this problem. I do a lot of driving and my voice only lasts so long when I'm singing to my self. This sound like a problem that I would have to take the whole electrical system apart to find the problem, but that is what I am trying to avoid by asking you guys!

Thanks so much for your help.

Sam

You bought a 97 a year ago?

What is the 12v power wire connected to? Tried running a wire straight to the battery?

Since the display works while the sound doesn't seems like its an
internal problem of the CD player itself and has nothing to do
with your wiring to the deck. Go and buy a cheap $30 stereo to
swap out with and test my theory.

Yes, I bought a 97 a year ago (used). If the problem was inside the CD player, how would that explain the power window thing? I still have the factory radio. I might try hooking that up to see if it makes a difference.
