How hard is it to check those 3 items to see if it has indeed been turned back? Maybe he can take it to another dealer and have them check it out? Just a thought to make sure the mileage was turned back. You think a dealer would even do this for someone though? Please keep us updated!!

why bother ?

There doesn't seem to be any question that it was turned back - the previous owner told him it was traded in with more miles than it now indicates.

I'm interested in this tri-level odomoter security system you guys have been discussing. I'm on the verge of buying this 2000 Dakota but it seems like such a good deal I can't help but wonder if the mileage is accurate. It's a base model 5spd 4x4 with 37,000 mi. Dealer is down to $7,600 without the puny warranty. It's OK with Carfax but I'd like some more concrete affirmation. There aren't even any records on Carfax past when it was brand new. Can any old Dodge dealer perform checks on this system or do I have to look elsewhere for this service?
thanks

durtydog i hope you get sufficiently reimbursed for this! At least you know who owned it when the odometer was tampered with, it beats having to trace back from owner to owner!

durtydog,
Is Decker Dodge also known as Chet Decker Auto Sales? I'm pretty certain that I looked at a Dak there last year.
Also, just curious who those 3 dodge dealers are, and who the owner is, because I've been to quite a few Dodge dealers and would like to know how they're connected, if at all.

Good luck with the truck!

Ben, prior to selling a car a dealership has to check the mileage against the systems installed. 99% of the time the dealership is correct. If you're worried about it still, you can take it to another dealer and ask them to verify the odometer. The service guy might give you a hard time about it, but if you start with a manager or someone in a suit they will be more accomidating. Also a 2000 4x4 with 37k on it for 7600 is a decent price. If its a V8 with good tires and paint then you are getting a good deal. 37k on 2000 is considered low miles and is probably a lease turn in. Check for ball joints and the usual stuff, most leasers don't bother having that stuff fixed while the warranty is active because they are getting rid of the truck anyway. I never buy a used vehicle that has been leased simply because leasers treat their cars like trash since they don't own it anyway. A friend of mine drove his brand new s-10 for over 24k miles on his lease before having its first oil change done. He changed it again before he turned it in so that they wouldn't fine him for it.

Can you request the contact information for a previous owner to check it out? If I am not mistaken, in Kentucky the dealership is required by law to furnish it if you ask. Just wondering if it is the same in your state.

My guess would be that the truck LOOKED a lot like the one he traded in and you both got carried away with the thought at that time.. But hey, who knows..

durtydog,
Wow, I've been following your story here... can't believe it. I guess that if the original owner was mistaken about the mileage, and the mileage from the dealer was correct after all, it's just as well that Decker's out of business. Either way, its just a lot of hassle that you could've done within I'm sure.

BTW, I'm in Montclair (originally from Vernon).
I've only been to Decker one time. I was new truck shopping for the very first time early last year, and went there and looked at a Dak just to get a little experience haggling with a dealer.
Eventually bought one at Bergen Co Dodge.

I would, but I've been going to Brunner Dodge in Verona... simply because they're right around the corner from where I work and Bergen Co. Dodge is a bit of a haul for me. I bought the truck there because they had the exact truck & features that I was looking for (I didn't tell them that of course- lol) Remember that HUGE snowstorm last February... that was the day that I was supposed to pick it up! Had to wait two more days, it was killing me!
