Hey, everything breaks down. If you ever own a house you will soon see that nothing is perfect. You make repairs monthly if not weekly. It is a sad part of life but no car is made perfect. No, I do not look forward to buying aftermarket rotors, shocks, and its seems after reading some threads possibly ball joints. But all of these things though will only add to the performance of my truck, along with a high flow cat, which to me is something to look forward too. Better handling, better braking, and better exhaust flow. I bought this truck because it is a real truck, it is gonna make truck noises (ocassional squeeks and things). If I wanted a truck that I would just drive (slowly) around town I would have bought a Ford or Toyota. Since I wanted to be fast and strong and comfortable(best ride of any truck and better than most cars Ive been in)I bought a Dakota. Other trucks have some of these things but not all in one. Stupid quirks and all my dakota is best for me.

Actually, part of what prompted my return to Dodge was that I thought the quality of Toyotas was declining. Still very good, but heading downhill. The minor problems I've had with the Dak could be attributed to the increase in complexity. If you're looking for a solid, powerful truck that is less than full sized nothing can touch the Dodge. Sure would be nice if they'd just give us grease fittings on ball and u-joints and better discs though. That would be icing on the cake !

I have a 97 Sport and love it. The only thing i had to take it in for was the front bumper losing paint and rusting. They repainted it under waranty. The Chevy I had before this had paint problems too but it was a fender that had the paint pealing off of it. I will have this truck for many more years.

I don't now about the rest of ya'll but i've owned& drove them all. I love my little truck & it is all truck it's a 95 dakota ( with the trusty old 5.2) . I have 120,000 mi. on it & all i've had to do is change the belt & water pump & of course roaters on the front. Every time I get in it it's to the floor (going around chevy's & ford's)so I think the quality is ABOVE all others. The interesting thing is that my truck came with grease fittins on everything but the u-joints ??

It's been my experience that Mazda, Nissan, Chevy, Toyota are all poorly made.. My father had a 86 Chevy.. it rusted so badly I could see the ground through the floor.. no kidding... He got rid of it about 5 years ago...

My Dakota is an 87, just one year younger than my father's chevy... The body has no rust and the engine is still performing better than ever...

If you want good trucks.. Go Dodge or Ford!

Just my humble opinion...

Well I wasn't gonna get into this but some of your posts just pulled me in. I used to be a customer service employee at a local toyota dealership here in my town and I can tell you exactly how great yotas are. First off have you ever seen an older model yota that didn't have the bed half rusted off above the rear fender wells? I admit that fit and finish is nice on the newer models but come on, if your gonna sell them to americans atleast build them big enough so that we can fit in them, how many people are 5'3" 140lbs that drive 4x4's? Lets not forget about the new model v6's popping head gaskets left and right these days, and I can vouch for this. Toyota is trying to keep this quiet by telling the dealers to do whatever it takes to keep the customers loyal. I am also sick of hearing how they just run forever! Gimme a break! They have the compression of a sewing machine, they oughtta last! They have more horsepower now though, oh thats right they keep popping gaskets! Buy whatever you want, I know that my quad has alot of foreign parts and isn't 100% all american, but atleast it fits me and looks great and I know that some lazy penny pinching worthless american just like myself put it together! Next your gonna say that yotas are made here too. Yep they are, but the money goes back home to the little five foot three guys!

I would have to agree with the post above. People say that Toyotas and Nissans (??) and other ricer trucks are more durable, but I have DEFINITELY seen one whole hell of a lot of Toys with rusted out ______ (insert any part of truck in blank), and out of the three guys I know that have had experience with Toyotas, 2 of them sold their Tacomas and bought Dakotas recently *L* and the third one is fixing to sell his - ALL because of unreliability (brakes, alternator, rotors, seatbelts, ignition system, etc.)

Toyota solved the bed rust problem when they eliminated the seem halfway up the bed, prior to '94; only problem area I've noticed here in America's "rust belt". I got 80,000 out of the brakes on both my Toyotas, then just needed pads. Never had a problem with any other component you mention, over 100,000 on each and all front end parts and shocks still good. Plowed both of them too, not like I babied them. Maybe they just like to be worked !

I for one am not one of those guys who sticks with a certain brand and says "All others are @$@#" I simply go by what the magazines/consumer reports say, and what my friends say. The biggest gripes I have heard about the Dakota are the rotors and the paint job. My paint job looks fine (with the exception of one or two small spots) and I had to replace the rotors on my last vehicle so that throws that out the window. Other than that I've heard nothing about GOOD things about the Dakota. I've ALSO heard a lot of good things about the Tacoma. And for me, it was honestly the fact that the Dakota is just bigger and a bit (ok, more than a bit) heavier and more solid for the same amt. I'd pay for a Tacoma or any other compact truck. Brand loyalty is a good thing but NOT when it comes at the exclusion of all other types of vehicles, whether you like Daks OR Toys.

I have found Dodge quality to be the best. I am only 24 but I have owned 11 cars since turning 16. I owned 2 Mustangs, an older Wrangler, and various other vehicles. I beat the living crap out of every car I know, whether it's pulling the ebrake at 40mph in a parking lot or mashing the gas at every stoplight. I am by no means easy on my cars. But the only vehicles that have held up for me are the Dodge/Mopars. I currently own a 98 Intrepid, 92 Dakota and a 80 Roadrunner. In the past I have had 2 Neons and a Dodge Ramcharger. All of these vehicles have been put through the growling tests I give them and passed with flying colors.

Just my thoughts

My truck list and repairs other than service items have been a 84 Ford Ranger 4X4 2.3/4spd. Two tie rod ends. At 142K swapped out the 4 cyl for a 5.0/C4. Sold it with 178K, still running.
1988 4X4 Dakota. Pitman and idler arm. Needed a muffler when I traded it at 146K. 1994 4X4 Dakota currently with 90K miles. Just replaced the lower ball joints and both hubs.(one was going bad).
Most people THINK a Japanese vehicle is better. A short story... A guy at work bought a Mazda pickup. I asked him why not buy a American truck? His reply was "Americans build junk. They don't know how to build a truck". After I congratulated him on being the only American that did quality work, I informed him his perfect Mazda was actually a re-skinned FORD Ranger. He still has it but for some reason avoids me. I guess he is just shy.
