Subject: Wreck but neither airbag deployed??
IP: Logged

Message:
I got into a wreck last Friday with my 99 dak where i looked away for a sec and then slammed right into the back of an 04 Explorer! Nice huh? I was wondering how come my airbags didn't deploy? I was doing like 35 or 40mph when i slammed into her. I hit her just right of center on my front bumper so i thought the airbags would have definetely deployed but they didn't. Not that i am complaining, because it would have definetely caused more injury to me than any good, but i was wondeing if there is a minimum speed for which the airbags to deploy??? Any info if you guys have any?

Airbags typically deploy at about 10 mph in a frontal collision only. Maybe you hit at too much of an angle, or it may be defective. Have you owned it since new? Some unscrupulous people steal airbags and replace them with wheels without them, or unplug them.

"Not that i am complaining, because it would have definetely caused more injury to me than any good"

Please explain why. I have treated hundreds of auto accident victims at the scene, and not once have I seen anything to substantiate your claim.

the same thing happened to me when I hit a girl that pulled out in front of me. I hit the driver side front fender and part of the door. I was also goin about 35 or 40 when it happened. Did slow down to about 30ish when we hit. the point of impact was just right of the center of my truck. did get a nice case of whiplash though.

Well i meant that at that speed it most likely will have caused more injury since it was not fast enough for me to be thrown forward very hard. That is what i meant. But as for the other question, i did purchase the truck new so no one has messed with my airbags that i am aware of? I guess there was a slight angle when we collided but we mainly hit almost dead on. I hope they are not defective though. I wonder if there is a way to find out if they are or not?

I seem to recall there were some recalls in the late 90's models... something to do with clockspring not working right causing airbag deployment failure. Might have been another TSB or recall related to something else that caused airbag deployment failure. Check www.autozone.com for recalls on your model.... not that it does you much good now. :(

you sure you were really going 35-40mph? you hit anything at 35-40mph and you WILL be thrown very hard. might be forward, might be sideways, but you will be thrown VERY hard...

Yeah i am pretty sure i was going that fast because when i hit her it lifted her Explorer off the ground. I saw it coming so i was braced with my arms on the wheel, but it was a pretty bone jaring hit.

There are 3 sensors in the front of your vehicle. Two have them have to be affected, you have to be going a certain speed, and there has to be sufficiant force coming within 15 degrees of dead on center. Your computer checks the airbag system every time you start the car. Most likey, if your airbags didnt deploy - they werent suposed to.

Airbags are designed to reduce major facial, neck and torso injuries - you didn't mention suffering any of those so again, your airbags most likely werent suposed to go off..

I agree that at that speed the air bag would've f'ed you up more than what it would be worth, both in injury, and in finances... those things are expensive to replace, and once the gases inside mix with the atmospheric gases, they form an acidic substance that can both burn your skin and your interior pretty bad. In a two ton truck you;re not really gonna need an air bag unless you slam into something really frickin' hard, or its a lot more solid than you are. if it had been a light post, you'd be better off with the air bag, but I would be willing to bet that when you smacked into her, the forward momentum threw that turd outta the way, unlike if you'd hit a tractor trailer, it'd just have stopped you suddenly.... thats where an airbag wouldve been really helpful.

Yeah, well, I have worked for years as an EMT at hundreds of auto accidents, and I disagree.

Airbags are meant to protect you from going through the windshield; from hitting the wheel or other interior parts; and from things hitting you. Mostly they're meant for people too stupid to wear seat belts with integral shoulder straps, which would also prevent you from hitting anything. It is MORE helpful at higher speeds, not less.

The chemical in airbags is sodium azide, and it DOES NOT burn your skin or anything else. What does happen is that the nylon air bag causes abrasions by hitting you and deflating within 1/10 second, and reddens the skin to look like a burn.

Glad you weren't hurt. At that speed things get ugly.
