I have a 1995 dakota extended cab sport with an automatic electric overdrive trans and a 318, the 318 is blown and pulled. I have a 1978 440 with a 727 complete with all brackets and driveshaft. I would like to use the overdrive trans but need to know what needs to be done for the whole swap, since the trans is elcetric can i use it without a special computer or can i just bolt it up like the original 727. Any info would be great. Also looks like i have a prob with the brake booster being to large, wonder if i can use 1 from a dodge van. Also any info on what headders i can use please

The trans is computer controlled, so you'll need some kind of control box. I don't recall seeing one for a Dodge, but I havn't really loked, either. Lentech would be a good place to start.

But, really, I wouldn't do it. I don't believe that AOD is strong enough for a big block. If you baby it and use a large cooler, it might last. But who wants to baby a big block? Sort of defeats the purpose.

Either get a specially built AOD, or stick with the 727 you have.

The overdrive needs a 99cent toggle switch to activate it (up til the 1996 model). Flip the switch and the overdrive will engage after the 2-3 shift, and the converter will lock up shortly after.
JVX/Memphis Performance has a controller that allows you to set the speed you want the overdrive and lockup to occur, as well as keeping overdrive on while kicking down for a better passing gear....for a whole lot less than Mopar's new 5-speed auto.

Listen to the guy who's done it, and ignore these other guys trying to tell you how to control a tranny you can't even bolt up. One post does it.

Aww Damn! And don't go to the following page and order the $540 adapter that makes it possible to do what "they" say can't be done.
http://www.transmissioncenter.net/dodge.htm
Scroll about 3/4 down the page. It's listed with a couple other adapters.

Gen1 - never said it can't be done with an adapter, just said that tranny he has won't bolt up. I also suggested using an expensive adapter to bolt up a weaker tranny might not be the best idea in another thread this guy posted; that's why IntenseDak39 and I are trying to clue him in he doesn't need to post the same thing in so many places. You never adressd that issue in your initial post; thats the most important thing you'd need to know.

Actually, I have addressed this, only in one of the other 1/2 dozen postings he's made. First and foremost, the best solution is to use a properly built 727 and add a Gear Vendors overdrive if OD is a must-have. However, JVX/Memphis Performance can build even an A500, not to mention A518 that'll handle all he'll get from a hot street 440, the overdrive will live, and ATF+4 would be an option, not a necessity. Now, it won't be cheap, but it can be done for under $3500 including the adapter. The Gear Vendors unit would be around $2000 plus labor...give or take.

OUCH!!! Checked out the Gear Vendors site. They've gone up! More like $2500-$2900 plus labor. But then again, it's one serious piece of hardware.
