I am going to buy some brakes for my boat trailer approximately 3500 lbs fully loaded. I have never had a trailer with brakes and am curious which type disk or drum and surge or electric would be best. It looks like disks only work with surge actuators. If anyone is experienced with both types, what are the pros and cons of both in your opinion?

Get with a good travel trailer dealer in your area. He might be able to install a set similar to those used on travel trailers, although they would need to be appropriate for the application: immersion in water.

Surge type are going to be hydraulic and would function for drum or disc. Again, they need to be sealed against immersion.

Good luck,...Doc

bigred, When you find out what type of trailer brakes are supposed to be used on a boat trailer post the info back.

I have a similar setup, 3000# boat/trailer without brakes and it can realy push the truck on panic stops. I didn't know how good trailer brakes were until I pulled my buddies 3000# (empty) camper with the Dak last month. Hit the brakes and the truck stops like the trailer wasn't even there.

I hope electric brakes can be used for marine applications and submerged since I bought a $100 Prodigy brake controller for the camping trip and trailer towing. I don't think I have seen electric brakes on a boat trailer before, only hydraulic from what I remember.

Anywho,, post back what you find out ;-)

I found a site that sells the complete surge disk brake setup. It does go into the pros and cons of electric and surge brakes. The address is http://www.championtrailers.com/brkart.html

Looks like they do not recommend the electric brakes at least where salt water is involved. About half my boating is in salt water so I guess I will go with the surge brakes.
