Subject: Alternate way to find used caps/shells

Just in case anybody is interested. I had been in the market for a camper shell for my 1992, but such things are not that easy to find. Most shells that I did find that would fit were in different areas of the country, and it did not make sense to drive 1000 miles to pick it up. This was the case for ones advertised here, on ebay and on other Dodge websites that hosted on line forums. However, a couple weeks ago I started contacting individuals and dealers that were selling trucks in my date range that already had camper shells on them. Finally a dealer in the same state said he would sell me the cap off the truck. Price was right, cap was in great condition and it only took a day to drive there and back.

I have seen posts off and on for people looking for shells close to where they live, so I thought I would offer this tip. I just used traderonline.com and searched for listings within 300 mi of where I live. You can also search cars.com and carsdirect.com as well, but I had the most success with traderonline.

Of course the cap does not match color wise with my truck, but it is white so it does not look too bad. Peeling paint, hail damage, rock chips and a dent in the side of the bed probably don't help much either, but it works for me.

Shoot...I wish somebody would be interested in the one I'm trying to sell. It's a red Leer cap that came off my 98 RC.

Hmm, I dont' know where you live but by me there are camper shell dealers all over the place who can order whatever you want and in the color to match your vehicle.

We are talking about a used cap for a 12 year old truck. Sure, I could order a new one but putting a 1000.00 cap on my truck would make no sense whatsoever. Used was the only way to go, and none of the cap dealers around me had much in the way of used inventory anyway. I actually found 1 cap at a dealer and he wanted 500.00 for the cap and the clamps were extra. The cap was not in very good condition either. Black paint that had faded so much it had turned grey.

I just bought a 98 Dodge Ram Cummins Diesel LWB and I too
am looking for a good "used" topper.
There seems to be no database for used tops and I cannot
afford an $1800 top.
Thanks for the traderonline.com idea !!
