If you set the dial to both the vents in the dashboard and the floor, is it still considered air conditioned even though it's not set to the snow flakes that stand for air conditioner?

What's nice about our Dak's ( the newer ones anyway) is that it has the seperate A/C button. You can run the compressor in any vent position.
I run mine on split level when it's not too hot and I don't want it all blowing in my face.

Now the two positions that say "MAX" is different where it closes the outside air intake and takes the air from below the passenger side floor board. It recirculates to cool better than cooling the HOT outside air.

So if it's mild outside, use the fresh air. If it's 110 like here in Phoenix, use MAX.

graphite, do you think i could rig up a switch like that in my 00? it would be really usefull in the winter time (to save gas) because the compressor runs even on defrost!!
the only time it dosent run, is in floor or vent.... but i got to thinking, does the a/c comp run in the winter to keep window fogging down??

another nice thing about the a/c is it makes my engine idle "right" owners of 4.7Ls should know what i mean (low idle) also that loud a$$ electric fan comes on with the a/c (even in defrost, BAD for warmup in winter)

I've been disabling my cars and trucks air
conditioning systems for years (to save gas) with
no damage to units. The easiest way is to find
the low freon cut off switch and unplug it. The
system now thinks all the freon has leaked out and
won't let the air conditioning run. On my older
cars and trucks with air, I even remove the "V"
belt or belts from the compressor, thats if they
have a seperate belt or belts that run the
compressor only. Why turn extra pullys all winter
for no reason?

Some say it's good to cycle the air conditioning
system on and off during winter months. It keeps
the seals from leaking. Also auto makers say
running the air conditioning when you put your
system into defrost helps dry the air going to the
windshield. This may all be true but I've never
lost a seal yet and really never seen any
difference on how my deforst system works any
better.

On my Dakota only, I also unplug the fuse to the
electric fan. In defrost the air conditioning
compressor will not run (because I unplugged the
low freon cut off switch wire) but the electric
fan will run. You're not gonna need that electric
fan during the fall and winter months.

You guys that have removed your clutch fans, DON'T
remove the electric fan fuse!

thanks RadioMan, i thought the electric fan would be detremental to winter warm-up. i think i know where that switch is on my dak (on the accumulator?? i think thats what the silver thing is on the pass side firewall)

if you live in an area with high humidity you'll still need that comp to run even on defrost. the air conditioner removes moisture from the air.

Yeah. It depends on humidity if you can do without the comp during the winter. It usually winds up cycling off half the time anyway (due to the low press switch) in defrost due to LOW pressures in low temps.
The seal should be lubed now and then by running the comp. If you don't, who knows how long it will be ok? Compressors ARE expensive though.

I use my electric for a primary fan. So I wont be unplugging that.
Warm up is no problem in Phoenix. It doesn't get very cold.
