I've only had my Dakota for 3 months but I can't believe how easily the sheet metal dings. It even feels soft to the touch--with my little finger, I can push the side panels on the truck in and out. Is Dodge using some kind of inferior grade sheet metal on these trucks, because I've never had a vehicle that's so soft before?

are you sure the truck is the only soft thing?
quit cuddling with your truck and just drive it. Chicks dig body damage.

i ALREADY GAVE UP ON MINe. So far here's what's happened:

HAd my door open on a windy day fumbling around in the back. A light gust of wind hit it and caused it to tap the car next to me ever so slightly. IT was suc ha light touch I couldn't have imagined it would cause any damage, but on closer inspection I found that a sliver of paint practically jumped fof the edge of my door exposing the primer.

Another chip on lower rear passenger door, no clue where it came from.

3 light surface scratches on passenger side doors of truck that appeared out of nowhere after a severe rain storm that were caused, as far as I can tell, by raindrops.

Door ding, most likely from someone next to me being careless with their car door.

I decided there's no point in being anal. IT's a truck, and you're missing half the fun of owning a truck if you dont get a little rough with it and use it as it was intended. Right now I see no reason to fix any of it, as it'll be a loowing battle. Ill to touch up one panel then the next week the wind will blow a leaf onto the truck and cause a scratch somewhere else. Im just gonna be as careful as can be and keep at least one layer of wax on it and hope for the best.

LAst week I was 4 wheeling. This week three days in a row I was moving bulky items. I figure eventually all the rest of the paint will fall off the truck and I'll just get it resprayed with something more durable.

What I'm concerned about is the resale value. I don't want it to look like a p.o.s. when it comes time to sell it or trade it in.

Same problem, dings easily. My thought would be they are not using inferior metal but thinner to same money. One of the local steel stamping shops here make automotive stampings and some are only .035"-.045" thick.

This is one of several reasons I always buy used vehicles even though I can easily afford to buy new. Buying new means you're automatically losing money the moment you drive it off the lot. Either way (new or used) is ok if it works for you, but like they said, just relax and enjoy the damn thing.

My solution to the resale/ depriciation problem: I won't be leaving much usable life, if any at all, for the next owner. I have no desire to keep myself in perpetual payments changing trucks every 2-3 years. Unless gas goes up to 5 bucks per gallon some time soon, I plan to keep this sucker for at bare minimum 150K.

I too have seen the misfortunes of such thin body panels. Shut my tailgate and put a nice palm-shaped dent in it. Took it to the local dent wizard and had it remedied for $40. I think I'm gonna have to see about a bulk discount with the dent wizard -- got two door dings since the tailgate incident. Ouch.
