Subject: Replacing cabs
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2001 quadcab with the 4.7l
I need to replace the cab (long story!) Does anybody know if I have to get a cab with the exact same options?

In other words if my current cab does not have power locks and my replacement cab does. . will the power locks work on the new cab?

I have talked to a mechanic here and he verified that the wiring harness is the same but that is all he could tell me.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Lee

There is this junk yard here in Alabama (I don't know where you are) that specializes in Dodge parts. If they don't have it, no one does. They are called Palmer Brothers and their number is 800-365-8305. I've been to their lot, they have almost everything Dodge.

Thanks for the info. .I will give them a call. I am not local ( I am in MT ) but I figure I will have to get the new cab shipped anyway.

so. .the story. .
I have always loved playing in vehicles and have pretty good at sliding a car/truck sidways. (I get lots of practice in rental cars). However, on this paticular day, I was in a very large field that I was sure was frozen and hard. I had been below 30 for a few weeks. so I was driving about 45 - 50 mhp and turned the truck into a slide (on purpose) after sliding all four wheels for a bout 20 feet the field got REAL soft! The front tire dug in and the soft dirt actually pulled the tire off of the rim. The rim hitting the dirt apparently made for a good fulcrum becuase that is when the truck slowly rolled over 3/4 of the way.

Needless the say, my cab does not look so good. but besides sheet metal the truck seems fine. I even drove it home the next day (I got some strange looks driving that truck accorss town!)

Anyway. .I need a new cab, and before I buy one I need to know what will work.

Thanks,
Lee

I bet ZoSoAir has NEVER made a mistake in his truck. That is why he can throw the first stone, so to speak.

When you treat your truck like a toy (and there is nothing wrong with that), sometimes things get broke. Ask anyone who goes 4 wheelin'. I think the ones who worship their truck and freak if they get a scratch are the ones with problems. A truck is meant to be used, use it!

Sorry to hear about the roll. How did the cab hold up (from a safety point of view)? Did you loose much headroom?

That is what it boils down to. .the truck was, still is, a toy much more than transportation.

Nobody was hurt, my bro-in-law was with me. To drive it home the next day I had lean the seat back a little more than usual. I felt like I was in one of those chopped trucks. The corner over my head took the most impact and it caved in a good 6-10 inches.

So does anybody have a contact who may know how 'interchangeable' these cabs are with different option packages?

Thanks,
Lee

A Dakota is not a toy. Simply put, it is another form of mass-accepted transportation. If I were going to go slide across some ice in the middle of no where I would do it on a 4-wheeler. That is what 4-wheelers are meant to do. Also, anyone who wants to slide across some ice in a vehicle needs to be taken out of the genepool. Too bad you werent killed.

LMFAO Lee...hopefully you find a replacement cab. Great story though. The last time I did anything even remotely similar was when my tranny decided to downshift while I was turning out of my school parking lot and spun me out. I drilled a sign with my rearend as I pulled a complete 180 (due to me overcorrecting and not realizing I still had my foot on the gas...stupid mistake I know).

ZoSoAir - If he chooses to treat his truck like a toy, then so be it. HE paid for it, not you. He was also doing it in a field...not exactly a real risk to any people besides his brother-in-law who probably consented to riding along KNOWING what risks were involved. Another thing, four-wheelers roll too you do realize. I own one and I have taken it sideways many many times on ice...a couple times almost resulting in flipping it...if your tires hit a soft spot, they will do the same thing Lee's truck did except you won't have a cab that's gonna bend when you roll, it'll be your neck snapping if you weren't lucky enough to consider bailing off before it was too late. Those vehicles are much safer to be doing all that stuff in...it just costs a lot more money to fix em after a wreck. I don't think Lee will have to worry about being taken out of the genepool, but if you think sliding across the ice on a four-wheeler sideways is safer than being in a vehicle... you might be taken out when you experience first-hand that it's not.

GB2000,

First I must say I like that name. No one knows who the real "you". Second, I have trying to figure it out for months, what doest that stupid picture next to you name mean?

As to addressing the topic of rolling things, there are nice ice scating rings out there that allow people to "slide across ice". Many of them dont charge that much at all.

Ever heard of a username? It didn't say full name required when signing up and as far as I can tell, you ain't the one writing the rules here. I take it that means your name must either be Z or ZoSoAir? Hmmm... yeah...guess so. At least I sign "Josh" at the end of all my posts. I don't intentionally hide any of my information from anyone...but I'm sure you don't need my name, address, phone number, SS#, credit card number and expiration date, etc. signed at the bottom of all my posts either. So I just keep it simple... "Josh" is posted under my post. If you want more info all you gotta do is ask and I'll usually give you that information or provide a reasonable explanation why I won't.

wtf i'm l33t!!@?! means...what the f*ck, i'm elite?! (Computer geek stuff). The picture comes from the website http://www.wtfiml33t.com (t-shirt graphic).

As far as ice skating rinks go... could you let me know the closest one to Piqua, OH (ZIP Code is 45356) that will allow me to drive my Dakota on it...or my four-wheeler? Last I knew there weren't any nearby that allowed that...and it's not as much fun when I slide without something that has an engine and wheels and stuff. Lawnmowers don't really go fast enough though.

Joshua M. Blackshire of Piqua, Ohio (Will that give you a better name association?)

Lee, the cab will have all the same harnesses(with the same features of course) and holes and grommets, all you have to do is swap the guts out of yours into the cab. It is only a shell, you already have all the parts out of your cab. You might have to get a wiring diagram, it will tell you if you need any more fuses or connections. So if you can get a cab that is furnished on the inside it should all work.

BTW, generally speaking if you roll a quad at 50 mph, especially on ice, most likey you will not walk away(at least not right away), and it probably won't ride home either. And it's a whole lot cheaper to drive sideways on ice than it is on pavement

Thanks for the info! That is very helpfull.

I was going 40-50 when I turned (not rolled) and it was not on ice it was a field that
was ,unfortunately, very soft in some places. I don't know how fast I was actually going when I rolled. .. but obvously much slower than when I first turned the truck. The truck slid about 20 feet (from looking at the marks afterward) before it started to roll. It only made 3/4 of a role and landed on the drivers side. I am sure the slide scrubbed a lot of speed off.

I called the yard you gave me the number for and I am ready to buy a cab now but am very nervous about buying one without seeing it.

If you would be willing to do me a huge favor and look at it for me. . .if you are heading in the direction of the yard I would REALLY appreciate it.

Let me know please,

You like GB2000's name? What the FK does ZoSoAir mean? You sign "Z", does that stand for "Zit"? Where's your picture? Oh, I forgot that profanity is not allowed. Besides all I got to is pull down my pants and I can see what you look like with no hair. The only four wheeling you probably experienced was in a stroller, dyck breath. Eat
sh!t and die,PUNK. Why don't you tell everyone where you live, you arogant little puke. After you get done licking the brown stuff out of your drawers you can think of some thing to say to this post. Don't play the lottery because you are a born looser. Is it true that your dog never licks his a$$ because he has you to do it for him? So So ZoSo
