Hey gang, just wanted to know how hard it is to install a transmission cooler?

And also, what is a good brand to buy, is perma-cool a good brand to buy, or should I get a B&M?

Whatever you buy make sure that it is an aluminum. If you want
it to be black you can paint it with a good quality engine enamel,
just make sure it's not painted to thick.

I also recommend switching to the Amsoil Synthetic ATF if you
have not already done so.

p.s. Oh yeah, Buy the biggest cooler that will fit too !

It depends upon your level of mechanical ability. A computer
nerd would surely botch the job but I am sure that anyone else
who can read and follow directions could do a jam-up job.

Tranny cooler install is pretty easy, the toughest part is mounting the cooler securely. It's a bad idea to use the quickie zip ties that come with the tranny coolers. The AC condensor or radiator can get damaged by the zip ties and/or cooler as the truck bounces around. A lot of people use them and might disagree, but why risk damaging the condensor or radiator. Plus you might thermal transfer if the cooler is real close to the condensor or radiator. Oh, the trans cooler should go in front of the AC condensor.

I mounted the left side of the cooler to the AC condensor bracket (not the core) and the right side to a homegrown bracket made from 1/2" angle iron. You need to mount the cooler so the tubes are horizontal and the incoming fluid should go into the bottom, this will force trapped out air in the cooler.

Other than that it's a snap since you only need to cut the stock rubber trans cooler line (forgot which one) and couple the new lines to the old line with some brass barb fittings and hose clamps. Get the trans to operating temps and and top off the tranny fluid.

I can't remember which brand of cooler I used but the stacked plate/tube design is much more efficient than coolers with the big round tube that snakes through the fins, thin tubes = good, thick tube = bad. Spend a few extra $ and save your tranny.
