Subject: gear shift lock-up???
IP: Logged

Message:
I've driven my new (used w/14K miles) '02 Dak SLT 4x4 4.7 auto tranny for 1.2k miles and in this time I've experienced an odd problem 4 or 5 times. I get in the truck, start it up, put my foot on the brake and try to put it in gear and the shifter locks. Then I take my foot off the brake, re-apply and then it goes right into gear, but just for a split second as I put it in gear, I get a strange rapid clicking sound from below. Anyone experience this? If so, what's the answer to fix it?
Thanks for any help....

The clicking noise is normal, solenoids. As for locking up it might be the brake switch is loose or something(or your not as coordinated as you think:).

A misaligned or flaky Park/Neutral Position switch or loose connection at the switch (3 prong switch screwed into the front part of the tranny on the driver's side, I think), is a possibility for the momentary lockup problem. This switch provides the ground for the starter solenoid so it can energize only when the gear is in Park or Neutral. This may be the cause the clicking sound from the starter solenoid ... sound like a loose ground (P/N position switch is triggering the solenoid.

OK, thanks...I'm gonna have to look into it. I got into my truck today to leave work, started it, put my foot on the brake and my cell phone rang...talked for 30 secs. or so, never took my foot off the brake and when I went to put it in gear, it was locked. I left my foot on the brake and let the shifter return to the resting position. Then I tried again and it went right into gear. Well, I should say, I'm gonna let the dealer look into it....still a few months on the warranty ;>)

To fix it, get a real tranny, that shifts WHEN you want it to! Not that fake-o pseudo 5spd auto crap!
