Subject: NV3500 fluid
IP: Logged

Message:
What are you guys using in your NV3500s ? The service manual says to use Mopar Manual Transmission Fluid (ofcourse) but it's like 15bucks a quart at the dealer. What are you guys using instead?

Also...I know I'm low because I had a small leak at the bottom of the shift tower. But how do you check the level? And where is the fill plug? I looked in the manual and it doesnt say where to check the level or where to fill the tranny. It goes on about what will happen if the level is low but nothing else. It really irritates me because I can't find the info.

Thanks a lot,

Paul

Any of the AMSOIL 5w-30 motor oils (XLF,ASL,HDD).

The oil level plug is located on the right hand side of the
transmission. (This is where you fill the transmission too).

Remove plug

Fill the transmission until the oil level is up to the bottom of the
hole (make sure the truck is parked on level ground).

Install Plug

Dr. D

p.s. you can buy a suction/fill gun to make this job very easy
from most any parts house for about $10.00 .

Red Line MTL, the sku is 50204. Great stuff, better shift quality. I've run it in several trucks.

Amsoil 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil - Dodge NV3500
IP: Logged

Message:

The Amsoil Series 3000 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil (HDD) works very well since it is very shear stable, thicker than most 30-wt oils, and DOES NOT contain friction modifers like moly.

Official Amsoil Recommendations:

Dodge Manual Transmission, NV3500

1) Amsoil SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil
2) Amsoil Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil
3) Amsoil SAE 5W-30 XL-7500 Synthetic Motor Oil

I gave you my recommendation: Amsoil S2000 HDD

Just thought that I would add that I have used AMSOIL 5w-30 for
many years in a "Cheby" C-1500 company truck that now has
197,000 hard miles on the NV-3500 and never a problem plus
the transmission still shifts like new.

The NV-3500 is prone to leak very slowly at the base of the
shifter tower and there is nothing you can do to completely stop
that.

Cool, you guys rock! I'll check em' all out. I knew there had to be a quality alternative to the Mopar fluid. I'm all about taking care of my truck with quality products but $15/quart is a little hard to stomach. Thanks again.

PAUL I WOULD STIK WITH THE DEALER STUFF. THE NV3500 IS A TOUCHY TRANS. THAT IS MY PERSONAL THOUGHT. BUT ANY WAY MY BUDDY HAS A DAKOTA AND HE PUTS THE BETTER DEALER OIL AND HE HAS DONE THAT FOR EVERY CHANGE. NOW HE IS UP TO 275,000 MILES AND TRANS IS STILL GREAT. I DO THE SAME FOR MY DAKOTA AND IT IS DOING GREAT AT 150,000 MILES. ME AND MY BUDDY PLAN ON HITTING 300,000 MILES ON ARE GAS ENGINE DAKOTAS. BUT ANYWAY YOU STIK WITH ONE CERTAIN OIL THE WHOLE TIME YOU HAVE YOUR TRUCK,DONT SWITCH AROUND IT IS NOT GOOD FOR THE TRANS,AND THAT IS A PROVEN FACT.

I would use the recommended dealer fluid also. You can get it cheaper at the Chevy dealer. Same fluid but it is called Synchromesh Fluid. BTW the NV transmission is used in both Chrysler and GM trucks. Cost at the Chevy dealer is just under 10 bucks.

I am not an Amsoil dealer. I just think that if you can buy better for less cost, and support a site sponsor, then you should. Otherwise you are dumb.

How do you know that NV-3500 fluid is just 5W-30 motor oil? Why wouldn't 5W-30 be specified then? BTW 5W-30 is in some transmissions, so why not the NV? Since it only takes 2 quarts, 25 bucks or so isn't gonna break the bank, so why even take a chance with your 2,000 dollar transmission? You really don't even have to change the oil anyway. Even if you use Amsoil you are only saving less than 10 bucks every 30,000 miles.

When I posted the original post I did'nt think it would be such a debated topic. The $15/quart thing is'nt that big of a deal, like stated above it's about $30/30,000 miles or so. But...its always good to look at other options. Other lubs specifically for Manual Trannies by a reputable company. Although I do find a little comfort in knowing that on the back of the Mopar Manual Transmission Fluid bottle it says " specifically formulated for the NV3500 ", for whatever thats worth.

I would say that if the Motor manual says it's ok to use Amsoil 5W-30 then it's safe to use it.
