 Subject: What's that Light?

Easy question, probably, but I can't figure it out.
I just bought a '96 SLT Club w/ AT. The instrument cluster has an idiot light on the far right bottom side marked 'GEN' The manual shows nothing for that particular spot on the cluster.
My curiosity is killing me. What's that light for?

Generator???We have no stinking generators, at least not in my truck. I dont think the 96s had them either.

Your truck is asking you to tell it what generation of dakota it is. Tell it it's a "GEN 3", and the light will go away.

I thought that might be it, but since I have the meter for voltage right above it, I wasn't sure - especially since the manual doesn't show anything there.
The light only comes on before startup and voltage shows OK while running, so I'm assuming the alternator is ok.

WHAT DOES THIS LIGHT STAND FOR IT CAME ON TODAY WHEN I WAS DRIVING HOME IT CAME ON AT EXACTLY 82,500 MILES!!!!! CAN ANYBODY TELL ME WHAT THIS LIGHT MEANS!!!
