Hey all!
Great site!

First post as I am a new "new to me 01 CC 4x4 4.7 SLT owner".

Got a great deal on the truck with a b-b parts warrentee but it has some miles. Just getting used to the truck and finding where the problems lay.

Today I put the truck through some rough country paces. After about 30 minutes of 4 bying I started to hear a god awful grinding and straining noise from the power steering when turning at anything but a mild radious. When I looked at the power steering fluid it was hot.

The truck has 265/70R16's on it from the previous owner. These are oversized for what the truck is rated for with stock rims. 235/75R15's are the stock rating. Once I'm on a good road and can get up some speed the fuid cools and the truck returns to normal.

Are these large tires too much for the power stering unit?

The tires clear fine and look great. Is the an aftermarket performance pump that could handle the load?

Or is the unit just going bad.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Could be getting too hot.. A lot of manufacturers are using power steering coolers these days. If you're somewhat handy, pick up a transmission cooler and some transmission hose (don't use fuel line, it just swells and leaks). and run the return line from the rack (or box) to the cooler then back to the pump. USE THE RETURN LINE as the cooler and the lines won't handle the high pressure.

Dave, I bought my 2000 with 60K on it and the P/S fluid was shot, realy dark and discolored. I was in the process of flushing/filling the tranny with Amsoil ATF and flushed/filled the P/S with the Amsoil ATF at the same time. I have almost 120K on the truck now and the P/S fluid (Amsoil ATF) looks like new, nice cherry red color.

Thanks for replying guyz!

Mine has a small cooler for the PS unit so I will try flushing and refilling before jumping into a new pump.

Thanks!
