Subject: Make O/D off by default?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a '98 SLT 5.2l w/ 4-speed AOD tranny....
Is there any way to make it so that it starts with
Overdrive OFF, requiring me to turn it on *IF*
I need it? Most of my driving is around town, and
I often forget to turn O/D off till I've already gone thru the gears. Maybe some computer flash update?

I've seen a web site that sold a switch that would do that. Here it is:

http://www.intermotive.net/od401.htm

I've not tried it, so no idea if it works or not.

I tow a travel trailer all the time and have been told to pull with OD OFF. So such a switch would be nice. I know you can just hit the button each time you start, but when pulling a trailer, you get distracted.

the only time you need to turn it off is when pulling a heavy trailer , have a full load in the bed or going up and down hills and you don't want constant downshifting. Only thing I wonder is why do you want to adversly affect your gas milage with the cost of gas being so hi?

True, you only need to turn it off when pulling loads etc, but for everyday drivability there would be no harm in having it default to off.
I drive with it off all the time in the city and get BETTER mileage that way. Lugging the engine around town at 35/40 mph with lagging part throttle response, or having to use enough throttle pressure to downshift the trans is not helping mpg, and it's not as much fun, either.

Transmission shops will tell you plenty harm is done running around town w/ OD on... Take my '92 Tbird
AOD for example. Apparently the OD gears and clutch packs are weaker or something than the mains.

Anyway, I will probably try the DIY method, but I noticed THIS product on Intermotive's site:
http://www.intermotive.net/duratran.htm
Apparently it toggles OD on/off at certain speeds
(55 on, 30 off - but these are programmable). Intriguing and has some allure, but I worry about it toggling OD off while rolling. Anybody have any thoughts on this DuraTrans thing?

Thanks for the links/hints... BTW, I DID search these forums and pretty much all I found was "can't be done"... so I took a chance and asked again. Looks like its BEEN done!

The travel trailer I tow is near the limits of what my Dak is rated for (I have the 3.55). I've been told by several sources (not just the local Dodge Dealer who thinks synthetic oil will destroy my engine) to not tow with OD on. The reason is because the gears and such for OD are not designed for heavy duty use. They are for unloaded highway driving to get the mpg up. It even says so in my Owner's Manual. Maybe it would be okay if it were flat where I live, but it isn't. I don't really think I could improve my mpg while towing the Ladybug (the name the kids gave to the trailer).

The DIY instructions work as advertised!

Had to remove 3 phillips & 5 torx screws to get to steering column harness. Used one relay, 4 connectors (couldn't find a wire-harness for the relay), a few feet of wire (preferably three different colors) and 3 inline wire-taps.

Thanks again y'all!!!!

An easier way is to add a seperate on/off toggle in the wiring just ahead of the connector to the trans, so that you have to turn it on to allow OD to function. You can do 2, one for OD, one for Lockup, but this may apply only to pre-96 transmission. I am not familar with the wiring for later trannies.
Of course you have to remember to turn it on once you get on the freeway.

The O/D doesn't activate unless you exceed a pre-set speed. So "city" driving would be done without the O/D activated. It kicks in when needed unless you over-ride it by turning it off.

PLarkinJr ... I found this from the fellow who came up with the idea.

"When you connect to the OD wire (orange/white) be sure to center splice & solder it... Don't cut it, and don't use Scotch-Locks or any mechanical electrical fastener--they are just too unreliable."

HTH.

Here's what I posted in the P1899 thread:
Ok, here's more info and what I've pondered: The inverter is a relay with the coil side wired from the starter-relay wire (DB/YL) in the steering column to ground so that the relay is energized when you start the engine. The switch side of the relay is wired from the O/D-Off request switch to ground. The net effect is that when you start the engine, it momentarily "pushes the O/D-Off button for you".

Now, looking at the schematics for the OEM starter circuit, the ignition switch START position send current thru the DB/YL wire thru the coil-side of the starter relay. On the other side of the starter relay is the Park/Neutral switch which grounds ONLY if in Park or Neutral, thus preventing the starter relay from energizing if you are in gear.

So, if I'm understanding this right, my inverter relay gives the DB/YL an alternate path to ground just like the Park/Neutral switch. Could that be causing the ECU to get confused about the P/N-switch? Or might it simply be that my ground on the inverter relay is not good enough (I tapped one of the black ground wires going to the frame-ground bolt under the dash on the left side of the cab)?

P.S. after I clear the P1899 code, it returns after I put the truck in gear the third time I drive it.

Summary/Followup:
Intermotive wants $200 for their module. The DIY one as described here will cause the MIL code 1899:
http://dodgeram.org/tech/mods/transmission/OD_inverter.html
However, using the same principle, it appears I was able to adapt it to work:

All work is done under the HOOD from the left side. Remove & open the PDC and find the BIG brown wire, tap it and connect to pin 85 of your new relay. Replace PDC. Find the orange with white wire in the wiring harness next to PDC, tap it and connect to pin 87 on your relay. Make a ground wire and connect it to pins 30 and 86 on your relay, and run it to nearest ground (I used one on the wheel-well between the RWAL module and PDC). This differs from the dodgeram.org method in that the signal from the starter relay triggers our relay, rather than the key switch triggering both. So, to recap:

85 coil energy - brown starter relay output
86 coil ground - to ground
30 ground signal for OD-off request - to ground
87 OD-Off request output - to OR/WT wire

Driven it nearly all day lots of errands and no MIL codes. Again, this is a 1998 SLT 2WD with 4-speed auto and 318cid V8.

AOD tranny? didn't Ford make the AOD tranny in there pre 96 modle trucks? I think so.

Also don't even bother with the o/d cause you'll forget to lock it in on when going 55 down the road.

And your tranny is a 42RE or A500 in Mopar terms.
